Job overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for a detailed job description for the role.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join the Adult Sleep Service at University Hospital Southampton as a Permanent Night assistant physiologist. In this patient-focused role, you will be a key part of the team delivering overnight diagnostic sleep testing.

Working exclusively night shifts, you will prepare and support patients attending overnight sleep studies, monitor them throughout their assessments, and ensure that all equipment is functioning correctly and safely. You will download and check sleep study data, identify poor-quality signals, and take appropriate action to maintain high diagnostic standards.

Working for our organisation

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalizing your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

Due to the nature of this role & service, this role is on-site & the hours are as advertised. Please talk to us at interview about the flexibility you need & we will explore what’s possible for the role and service

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognizing that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a valued member of the Adult Sleep Team, you will collaborate with physiologists, nurses, and wider colleagues to ensure the smooth running of the service. Your responsibilities will also include processing returned CPAP devices, managing masks and consumables, maintaining stock levels, and completing essential administrative tasks such as updating databases, phoning patients, and supporting the CPAP email and telephone helpline.

This role is based at Lymington Hospital and does not provide any opportunity for home working.

The role will include working one full night shift of 12 hours per week and an additional 3 hours during the week, or working two nights one week each month. Flexibility will be required to also work days as required by the service.

The service currently runs Monday-Friday.

Flexibility will be required to also work day shifts as per the service requirements.
