Job overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

We are looking for the successful candidate to start in March 2026.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking enthusiastic doctors to join our dedicated team in the Children’s Emergency Department (CED). In this role, you will provide high-quality clinical care to acutely unwell and injured children as part of the full-shift resident doctor rota (days, mids, twilights, and nights).

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Clerking new patients and reviewing those in the Paediatric Short Stay Unit
  • Participating in ward rounds and clinical meetings
  • Supporting the team in managing critically ill children in resuscitation when required

This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop your skills in Paediatric Emergency Medicine within a supportive and dynamic environment.

Working for our organisation

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalizing your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognizing that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will work across the full shift lower-tier rota (days, mids, twilights, and nights), providing high-quality clinical care to acutely unwell or injured children, including those requiring resuscitation. Your primary responsibilities will include clerking new patients and reviewing children in our short-stay unit. You will be supported in managing patients across all areas of the department, with guidance available whenever needed.

As part of our extensive education programme, you will have opportunities to teach, learn, and actively participate in research through PERUKI and PEM initiatives. You will also be encouraged to contribute to quality improvement projects, focusing on areas that interest you, while developing your skills, knowledge, and leadership abilities.

For an overview of the position, please refer to the attached Job Description and Person Specification document. This includes a detailed breakdown of the key responsibilities, role expectations, and the qualifications we are looking for. It outlines the essential criteria for the role and is designed to support you in preparing your application by helping you evaluate how your skills, experience, and professional background align with the requirements of the role.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).  Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave.

Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)
