We are seeking an experienced and motivated individual to drive clinical quality improvement across our Radiotherapy and Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) services. This is a senior, influential role that will work closely with clinical, operational and governance colleagues to deliver evidence-based, patient-centred improvements, aligned with the Trust’s strategic objectives.

The post holder’s main base will be at the Macclesfield site in East Cheshire but, will be expected to work across all Christie sites as required. We are able to accommodate a mix of on-site and home-working, as well as flexible shift patterns. 

This is a 12-month fixed term post.

All candidates must be either registered with the HCPC or the Nursing and Mid-Wifery Council and hold a degree level qualification associated with an allied health professional role. See Person Specification within the Job Description for further requirements.

You will provide leadership in quality improvement methodologies, particularly QICA, ensuring robust evaluation, audit and service development across multiple disciplines. This role is ideal for a professional with strong analytical skills, excellent communication abilities and a passion for improving cancer care outcomes.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.

We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.

We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

·       To lead and engage others in clinical Quality Improvement initiatives 

·       To identify and achieve key performance indicators relating to the post

·       To work alongside stakeholders to deliver on a range of projects

·       To retain oversight and responsibility for using the QICA methodology in service development, audit and evaluation.

·       Ensure a coherent, shared and integrated approach between different disciplines and where applicable work collaboratively with other services

·       To be accountable for quality service delivery and the improvement of

COMMUNICATION AND RELATIONSHIP SKILLS

  • Provides and interprets complex information, including of a sensitive nature. Reports on performance management relating to targets and operational activities, namely those relating to service development and quality improvement
  • Delivers training on complex processes and technologies relating to service development initiatives
  • Uses highly developed negotiation and communication skills to navigate difficult conversations, meetings and operational challenges
  •  Co-ordinates and communicates across multiple disciplines/services/agencies

PLANNING AND ORGANISATIONAL

  • To develop, lead and organize the management and meetings associated with quality improvement
  • To disseminate outcomes of projects locally and within the wider professional communities
  • To support and engage staff in the undertaking of service development projects
  • Provide leadership in the context of service development
  • To manage own workload under the supervision of the Centre Manager, delegating responsibilities for specific tasks to administrators, practitioners and other professionals as required
  • To be visible to all staff, patients and carers to be able to respond to requests for project support.
  • Provide professional advice and guidance at a senior level within the service group.
  • Contribute to service planning and development inline with the Trust’s strategic objectives
  • Participate in and initiate working groups within the Trust using projects to drive policy formation and change

ANALYTICAL AND JUDGEMENTAL SKILLS

  • Establish appropriate methodologies to produce complex data that can be used to affect change/development
  • Identify relevant information/metrics/performance indicators relating to local and trust quality targets
  • Develops complex strategies and evaluation processes that facilitate comparisons of a range of options relating to service delivery
  • Uses incidents and route cause analysis to identify trends and translates this into corrective and preventative actions
  • Identifies opportunities for development

RESPONSIBILITY FOR PATIENT/CLIENT CARE

·       To ensure the radiotherapy and SACT services deliver high quality evidence-based care to all patients.

·       Keeps up to date with contemporary trends in treatment deliveries and patient care

·       Demonstrate personal and professional skills, including emotional intelligence which can be adapted to the needs of a diverse range of adult cancer patients

 

RESPONSIBILITY FOR POLICY/SERVICE DEVELOPMENT

·       Conforms with trust governance in relation to service development and policy writing

·       To be accountable for adherence of staff to relevant policies in relation to service development and QICA processes

·       To lead/participate in project management and service development and to implement outcomes in line trust policies

·       Work alongside governance teams to monitor and co-ordinate the implementation of policies and systems

·       Advanced knowledge and skills in the use of digital systems to create methods of collecting evidence and presenting.

·       Ensure policies are conformed with through appropriate training and education

·       Support radiotherapy and SACT leads in the implementation of clinical improvement work.

·       Author and contribute the development of protocols, standard operating procedures and/or clinical guidelines driven by project outcomes and evidence-base.

 

RESPONSIBILITY FOR FINANCIAL AND PHYSICAL RESOURCES

·       Works with the Centre Manager to identify financial implications of any project during the planning phase and monitors associated budgets

·       Ensures trust policy is complied with in regard to procurement of resources relating to projects and that costs are justified

·       Ensures tracking and maintenance of resources associated with projects under their management

·       Contributes to the development of business cases where required

RESPONSIBILITY FOR HUMAN RESOURCES

·       No direct line manager responsibility but will support and train radiographers, nurses and clinical support workers in the context of their involvement with service development projects

·       Coordinate with the centre manager and service leads regarding availability of staff to support with projects

 

RESPONSIBILITY FOR INFORMATION RESOURCES AND ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

·       The post holder will record personally generated information and ensure a system is in place- compliant with best practice in data management and Trust policies- to record, collate, process and store information on projects and associated data

·       The post holder will maintain departmental databases as appropriate according to radiotherapy and SACT processes and may assist in the proposal, development, implementation and training of these processes.  

·       Collates, interprets and presents data and information from clinical and administrative processes, ensuring this is adapted to the target audience

·       Will generate reports, project write-ups and presentations

·       Facilitates the sharing of project outcomes with the wider scientific community, nationally and internationally.

Qualifications
