Job overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Main duties of the job

Please can this go live on Monday 26th January as the new closing date is Monday 9th February.

The reason this advert was pulled was because it was contradictory about who could apply and this caused confusion among both internal and external applicants.  Therefore, can we please change the first sentences of both the ‘job overview’ and the ‘Job Description & Responsibilities’ sections?

Blood Transfusion at UHS has an exciting opportunity at band 6 level, suitable for either a nurse or biomedical scientist, within our Transfusion Practitioner team

We are looking for an organised, and motivated person to deliver training and education to clinical colleagues regarding blood transfusions.  This will be alongside other transfusion-related duties which support the effective running of the transfusion service with a strong focus on patient safety.  Like in other NHS departments, it is essential that we make best use of the resources available to us.  As donated blood is a precious resource, ensuring its safe and appropriate use is also a central part of the team’s focus.

This is a permanent part time position for up to 22.5 hours per week and offers weekday only working with no anticipated out of hours work.  It could be especially suited to someone wanting to split their working week between a frontline, patient safety or education-based role.

Attached you will find the person specification document which provides more detail about the essential and desirable skills and experience needed for this role. We highly recommend you review this document and use it when completing your application as these criteria are used by hiring managers as guidance during shortlisting.

For an overview of the main duties of the role please see the ‘Job Description and Main Responsibilities’ section below.

Working for our organisation

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalizing your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognizing that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are looking for a registered nurse or registered biomedical scientist with significant acute experience in an area of high blood usage, to join our small Transfusion Practitioner team, based within the Blood Transfusion department in Pathology.

Experience of teaching and supporting colleagues with learning is desirable as one of our principal areas of work is the education of the workforce for whom blood transfusion forms part of their role.

The role will give you an opportunity to participate in trust-wide audit and project management in order to improve practice so attention to detail and organisation skills are a definite advantage.

If you have a collaborative approach, enjoy networking across disciplines and specialties and working as part of a specialist team then working as a Specialist Transfusion Practitioner could be the perfect role for you.
