The Assistant Cancer Navigator assists and supports the Urology Cancer Navigators for the Urology department on behalf of the consultants and their teams.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Urology Assistant Cancer Navigator to join the department in the Stokes Centre for Urology, we are seeking someone that has excellent interpersonal skills and a calm and methodical approach.

The Assistant Cancer Navigator assists and supports the Urology Cancer Navigators for the Urology department on behalf of the consultants and their teams.  Please see the job description for full details of the role.  The post holder will need to be flexible and adaptable in this busy working environment.    

You will be expected to have an excellent telephone manner, be courteous and efficient and have an excellent working knowledge of Word, Excel spreadsheets and email. Previous experience of Cerner would be advantageous, but not essential as full training will be given. This is an office based role.

Responsible for assisting with the booking of outpatient appointments and procedures, prioritising TWR patients.
Uploading of TWR referrals onto SCR                                                    Demonstrate knowledge of specific hospital procedures and software programmes.
Investigating reasons for patients breaching, updating PTL for breach prevention.
Assist in the identification of related problems and their resolution.
To receive referrals from within the Trust and from external hospitals for cancer treatment management
Recording clinical outcomes for data purposes
Request imaging for patients and prepare clinics

Organisational Management 

Management of outpatient bookings working to clearly defined policies.
Ensure patients are dated within their waiting time breach dates and in order of clinical need.
The post holder will be expected to provide cover for the Cancer Navigators during annual leave, sick leave and during busy periods, although this duties will be suitable for a Band 4 position.

Communication 

Contact patients using persuasive and negotiating skills in order to agree a date for their procedure. 
Provide excellent communication and information for patients coming into hospital. Complete patient questionnaire, generate letters to patients with information regarding medication, transport and send appropriate information leaflets. 
Communicate with the Urology Nurse Manager / Junior Sister regarding any patients with special requirements. 
Communicate regularly with patients, respond to telephone enquiries from patients and relatives using tact and diplomacy. 
With direction & support, the post holder must be prepared to telephone patients/consultants about contentious issues, such as their procedure being cancelled. 
The Assistant Cancer Navigator will be expected to inform the Assistant Specialty Manger / Specialty Manager of any problems relating to their role or department.
The Assistant Cancer Navigator must discuss and agree with the Assistant Specialty Manger / Specialty Manager any changes they wish to make to their working practices. 

Management of information 

The post holder must be fully conversant and competent in the features of the patient administration system Cerner – Full training will be provided.
The post holder will expected to have full knowledge of the contents of the Patients Access Policy. 
Be responsible for chasing CT / MRI and histology reports and reporting any capacity issues.
Be responsible for completing patient questionnaires.
Be responsible for all relevant patient information, clinical and non-clinical to be recorded correctly onto Cerner.                                                            Be responsible for the quality and integrity of information concerning patients kept on Cerner.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year experience managing and organising own workload
  • Experience within an environment undergoing change
  • Proven experience in administration or dealing with patients/customers
  • Ability to make decisions autonomously, when required, on difficult issues, working to tight and often changing timescales
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office with intermediate keyboard skills OR/AND any other relevant IT Systems applicable to the applicant.
  • Excellent written communication skills
