As a Band 6 Paediatric Haematology & Oncology Nurse, you will play a key role in delivering specialist care to children with complex haematology and oncology conditions, including those undergoing bone marrow transplant and gene therapy. 

To be responsive in your own development and maintaining competence in specialist skills, e.g. Intravenous Therapy, Line Safety, Chemotherapy and Stem Cell Transfusions, etc.

You will act as an experienced and developing clinical specialist, providing high quality, evidence based care while supporting families through emotionally challenging journeys.

The postholder will regularly take charge of the ward, offering visible leadership that ensures safe staffing, excellent standards of care and smooth coordination across the service. 

You will support, guide and assess junior staff and students, help drive quality improvement and champion a positive, learning focused environment.

This role requires excellent clinical skills, strong communication, and the confidence to work both autonomously and as part of a MDT. 
To be flexible across hospital areas may be required as patient and service needs evolve

  • Deliver safe, high quality, evidence based care to children with haematology and oncology conditions.
  • Act as a developing clinical expert, providing specialist advice and autonomous clinical decisions within your scope.
  • Demonstrate competence in Central Venous Line Safety, incl. Hickman Lines and Portacaths, Chemotherapy and Blood Transfusions, etc.
  • Carry out detailed patient assessments and develop personalised care plans with the MDT.
  • Offer compassionate emotional and psychological support to children and families, respecting diverse backgrounds.
  • Regularly take charge of the ward, maintaining safe staffing and smooth operational flow.
  • Maintain a safe, clean and well managed environment, escalating risks promptly.
  • Support discharge planning and help prepare families for transition home.
  • Work across hospital areas when needed to support service demands.
  • Provide visible leadership during shifts when acting as nurse in charge.
  • Be a positive role model for the nursing team, promoting high standards of care and behaviour.
  • Delegate tasks safely and monitor outcomes, supporting less experienced staff.

  • RN/ RSCN / RN (Child)
  • Post Grad Course in the Speciality or Equivalent, e.g. HDU
  • Chemotherapy Competent
  • Experience supervising junior staff; mentorship in practice or equivalent

  • BSc/MSc in Health or Social Care
  • Leadership of Management Qualification or Equivalent

Experience

  • Significant experience at Band 5 within the relevant specialty
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Has recent experience in working in an acute ward
  • Have been involved in QI and change management programme / project

  • Experience in change management and acting as a positive change agent
  • Can Able to teach in a classroom setting

Skills

  • Specialist knowledge relevant to the patient group (for specialist areas)

  • Ability to work within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct
