Job overview
Lancashire & South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust (LSCFT) have an exciting opportunity for an experienced, innovative and enthusiastic clinical psychologist or a newly qualified clinical psychologist who has accredited training to a post graduate level or equivalent, currently registered with HCPC, to work within a busy and well respected Community Learning Disability Service.
Whilst this position is advertised at an 8A banding, we are also willing to consider a band 7 newly qualified or those with less than 2 years qualified experience. We understand this is a fixed term contract however there may be an opportunity to extend further. Hence we would encourage you to contact us to discuss this further if you are interested and/or apply. We are also committed to promoting CPD opportunities and exploring training related to specific psychological therapies.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide a Clinical Psychology Service to adults with Learning Disabilities within Pennine Lancashire. This will include the provision of enhanced specialist psychological assessment and therapy, working within the policies, procedures and protocols applicable to the service.
The post-holder will offer advice and consultation on patients’ psychological care to psychology and non-psychology colleagues and to other, non-professional carers, working autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the service’s policies and procedures. They will develop advanced skills in consultancy by implementing formal systems of consultancy as directed and guided by the Locality Professional Lead and his/her deputies.
The post holder will also provide direct clinical intervention to adults with Learning disabilities in a variety of settings and provide consultation training and supervision to the wider MDT on the psychological care of adults with a Learning Disability.
This post offers the opportunity to joint work with a range of professionals who work with adults with a Learning Disability to deliver psychological assessment and a range of psychological interventions.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Doctoral level training in clinical psychology or equivalent for those who trained prior to 1996, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the BPS.
- HCPC registered as a Practitioner Psychologist (Clinical).
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis, as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology.
- Knowledge of legislation, and its implications in relation to the client group and mental health, including child protection and its implications for both clinical practice and supervision.
- Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the BPS by completion of CPD log demonstrating a minimum of 40 hours per year.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working within a provision for people with a learning disability.
- Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
- Experience of exercising clinical responsibility for client’s psychological care and treatment both as a professionally qualified care co-ordinator and also within the context of multidisciplinary care plan.
Skills
Essential criteria
- Enthusiasm for a broad range of psychological phenomena, an interest in models of service delivery and an ability to articulate the value added by clinical psychology services within the context of multidisciplinary physical and mental health services.
- Ability to contain and work with organisational stress and ability to ‘hold’ the stress for others.
- Ability to sustain intense levels of concentration responding and participating as required.
