Locum Consultant

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) is a 1,200-bedded teaching hospital with state-of-the-art facilities for modern patient care: 1100 beds in the PFI and 100 in Cromer Community Hospital.

The NNUH is part of Norfolk and Waveney University Hospitals Group which includes the James Paget Hospital, in Great Yarmouth and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King Lynn.

We carry out nearly one million outpatient appointments, day case procedures and inpatient admissions annually. The population we serve is predominantly the people of Norfolk and north Suffolk, although some patients are referred from further afield especially to access specialist services available at this Trust.

Our staff of c10,000 care for and support patients who are referred to us by around 100 local GP practices and from other acute hospitals. We run more than 60 specialist services as a tertiary centre, including more than a dozen specialist cancer and radiotherapy treatments, and we are one of the biggest cancer centres in the country.

We provide complex spinal surgery services, specialist Neonatal Intensive Care, neurosciences services and specialist cardiac services. Our Trust runs specialist dermatology, rheumatology, endocrinology, adult congenital heart disease services, treatment of complex liver and pancreatic diseases in adults, cystic fibrosis services and intestinal failure services. We are enhancing our urgent and emergency care specialist services for patients with significant injuries as a result of trauma and have an ambition to become a Major Trauma Centre. NNUH is currently the busiest Trauma Unit in the East of England caring for almost 850 trauma patients annually many with complex care needs.

Job overview

The General Surgical service of the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital is seeking three full-time consultants for a fixed term period of 12 months while substantive recruitment is in process. These are replacement posts and will join a team of ten general surgeons at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King’s Lynn site.

The delivery of general and gastrointestinal surgery across Norfolk is in flux with the service at the QEH now being integrated with the department of the Norfolk & Norwich.

This appointment will be to the department of the NNUH in terms of peer support and clinical leadership, but most of these appointments’ clinical work will be delivered at the QEH. More complex surgery will be undertaken at the NNUH site.

This post would be ideal for a candidate who is comfortable in the generality of surgery but feels they would want to continue or develop a sub-specialist interest. Sessions at the NNUH can be tailored to the successful candidate in discussion with the NNUH Service Director.

Main duties of the job

The appointment is to the Trust, not to specific hospitals. As above, the majority of day-to-day clinical work, the on-call service (1 in 9 emergency cover for General surgery at QEH) and administration will be delivered at the QEH site. Sessions at the NNUH can be tailored to meet the successful candidate’s requirements, in discussion with the NNUH Service Director.

All consultants, including the appointee, will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trust’s Clinical Governance programme. This includes active participation in clinical audit, quality, clinical guidelines/pathways, professional development, appraisal and risk management.

The appointee will be a member of the Consultant Staff Committee and be expected to serve on this committee

Applicants would be expected to have broad training in general and laparoscopic surgery and be comfortable with the nuances of day case, HVLC (high volume low complexity) surgery.

Applicants with an ambition for service design / quality improvement work would be particularly welcome. For example, the QEH site does not currently offer a hot gallbladder service (which is very well established at the NNUH site) but the successful applicant would be in an ideal position to develop this, supported by the experience of the surgical department at NNUH.

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Registrar (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview)
  • An appropriate higher surgical qualification
  • ATLS Provider
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree (e.g. MD, MS, PhD)
  • Educational/ Supervision training/qualification

Aptitudes

Essential criteria
  • Good communicator.
  • Capable of working in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Enthusiasm for service development and teaching.

Desirable criteria
  • Management skills / training.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Applicants who are Nationals from another European country or elsewhere overseas would have to show equivalence to the 5 years training period in the National Health Service required for the specialty
  • Training and expertise in children’s safeguarding (training provided at the Trust)
  • Training and experience in laparoscopic general surgery.
  • Experience in undertaking “Hot” cholecystectomy for cholecystitis
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in research (including research governance and grant application).
  • Published papers in area of special interest.
  • Post CCT fellowship
