The gynaecology service is proud of our hysteroscopy service and are expanding our clinical diagnostic services to include a nurse specialist who will support the consultant team in the diagnosis of women’s health conditions.
We have the exciting opportunity for a 18 month fixed term fulltime specialist nurse hysteroscopy post, based within the gynaecology service at Gloucestershire Hospitals Trusts.
Any candidate who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full time will still be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content can be discussed on a personal basis. Job share applicants are also welcome.
The successful candidate will carry continuing responsibility for a defined caseload, including the setting of standards of care, the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programme of care. The successful applicant will provide nursing expertise to a specific patient group and will contribute to the development of the specialty service as well as contributing to the strategic direction of nursing within the Trust.
You will be expected to work closely with gynaecology and oncology clinicians as well as the gynaecology dedicated outpatient nursing team to provide a seamless service and deliver high quality surgical outcomes within national targets.

The Gynaecology Directorate is part of the Trust’s Women and Children’s Division. The Chief of Service for Women and Children’s Services is Dr Simon Pirie, who also holds clinical commitments as a consultant in Neonatology. The Divisional Operations Director is Becky Hughes and the Divisional Nursing Director is Karen Pudge.
The Gynaecology service is based at Gloucester Royal Hospital, and provides care for women from Gloucestershire. Operating lists are undertaken at both Cheltenham and Gloucester hospital with outpatient clinics being held in the Women’s Centre at Gloucestershire Royal, Cheltenham General and surrounding community hospitals.

Clinical Responsibilities/Key Responsibilities
The appointee will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high-quality care to the patients presenting to the Department.
- The provision of high-quality care in all clinical settings, including outpatient clinics and working well as part of a multidisciplinary team
- To support the clinical decision making of resident medical and nursing staff
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care and treatments using advanced clinical knowledge and clinical skills
- Demonstrate extensive professional development
- Take clinical responsibility for all women who attend to include follow up arrangements
- Utilise critical decision-making skills and advanced nursing skills such as performing IUS insertion, directed biopsies, polypectomy
- Act autonomously and have the skills to develop protocols and care pathways to carry out criteria led outpatient treatment
- Assess, implement and evaluate individualised strategies to manage the physical, psychosocial and emotional needs of the women who present to the clinic.
- Maintains accurate contemporaneous records of all interventions of care and advice given, in line with Trust policies and NMC code
- Provide evidenced-based information to patients and their relatives/partner/carer to facilitate informed choices and establish ‘informed consent’
- Determine in partnership with the women the most appropriate management and care pathway
- Work as a non-medical prescriber in accordance with NMC code and Trust policies in area of clinical expertise, or willingness to undertake qualification. In the interim be able to use PGDs
- Refer patients as appropriate to other members of the multi-disciplinary team
- Work with Matron to lead the development of nursing practice, reflecting the CMT and Corporate Nursing business plans
- Provide a clinical lead and role model to the nursing team by delivering high quality care as an expert practitioner
- Set, monitor and seek to continuously improve standards and the quality of patient care, including those standards defined in the National Benchmarks for Essential Care
- Develop and implement policy and practice guidelines specific to the clinical specialty
- Safe management of unwell patients including management of vasovagal episodes, uterine perforation
- Management of patient analgesia including the use of Entonox or similar drug which may require additional study or training
- Preparation and/or updates of relevant patient information
- Attendance of involvement in MDT meetings
- To respond to telephone enquiries and be able to assess patients via telephone communication
Professional Development, Education and Training
- To participate in ongoing training and personal development including attendance at BSGE conference as per requirements to maintain registration
- To contribute to multi-disciplinary skills training
- Provide formal teaching/education sessions to other health professionals and the public to include participation in outreach work, particularly those in vulnerable groups in order to help address inequalities
Management and Leadership
- To provide medical information for the development of systems appropriate for Trust needs
- To participate in departmental consultant and senior staff meetings whilst remaining within the framework of the agreed strategy of the Trust and the department
- To attend other departmental, divisional and Trust meetings as necessary
- To attend regional and national meetings as necessary
- To undertake all work in accordance with Trust procedures and operating policies.

- Evidence of active BSGE Hysteroscopy accreditation
- Evidence of continual professional development and portfolio of learning
- Specialist clinical skills including history taking, physical examination, diagnostic assessment, treatment procedures. Informed decision making skills
- Demonstrable level of Experience within speciality
- Experience of Formal/Informal Teaching in practice
- Experience of collecting data for audit
- Experience of Managing and Leading a team
