Job overview

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Apheresis Lead Nurse to provide expert clinical leadership within our specialist apheresis service at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. This is a key role combining advanced clinical practice with leadership, education, and service development. You will play a central part in ensuring patients and donors receive safe, compassionate, and high quality care, while helping to shape and grow an outstanding apheresis service within Barts Cancer Centre.

Main duties of the job

As the Apheresis Lead Nurse, you will be an autonomous practitioner and the clinical lead for apheresis services. You will deliver and oversee complex apheresis procedures, coordinate safe and efficient patient pathways, and act as a key advocate for patients and related donors.
You will lead and support nursing staff through line management, mentorship, education, and role modelling, while promoting evidence‑based practice and continuous improvement. Working closely with the multidisciplinary team, you will ensure services meet national standards, including JACIE and HTA requirements, and contribute to audit, quality improvement, and service development. This role also includes leadership responsibilities such as managing your workload, supporting governance activity, and contributing to the strategic direction of the service.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Registered Nurse
  • • First Level Degree
  • • Post registration qualification in area appropriate for speciality (e.g. cancer and/or Haemato-Oncology +/-Stem Cell Transplantation).
Desirable criteria
  • • UKONS SACT Passport
  • • Teaching/Mentoring qualification.
  • • Leadership course
  • • Evidence of Master’s Degree level study or willingness to undertake.
  • • Advanced communication skills training.
  • • Level 2 psychological support training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Significant post registration experience in Haemato-oncology / Stem Cell Transplant / Cancer related area.
  • • Minimum 2 years Apheresis experience.
  • • Previous experience of student supervision and clinical education.
  • • Experience of working well within MDT.
  • • Experience of audit, research & evidence based care.
  • • Extensive blood product administration experience.
Desirable criteria
  • • People leadership / management experience.
  • • Experience managing budgets/resources.
  • • Experience managing clinical governance activities (complaints, risk and incident management).
  • • Experience of SACT administration.
  • • Research experience.
  • • Experience teaching/supporting students.
  • • Experience of delivering change management.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Proven clinical skills & sound knowledge base in Haemato –Oncology, Stem Cell Transplant and Cancer
  • • Clear understanding of this role and the associated responsibility and accountability
  • • Knowledge of JACIE and HTA standards.
  • • Knowledge of cancer patient experience, NICE guidance and government targets.
  • • Knowledge of counselling techniques
  • • Clear understanding of clinical governance
  • • Up to date knowledge of professional and political issues.

  • • Autonomous practitioner in delivering Apheresis procedures using the Spectra Optia
  • • Ablity to take charge in an acute setting

  • • Phlebotomy and Cannulation skills competency.
  • • IV medicines administration competency.
  • • Competency in accessing/.managing CVADs.
  • • Competency in administration of blood products.

Desirable criteria
  • • Competency to perform ultrasound guided cannulation.
  • • Competency to perform peripheral blood stem cell/bone marrow infusions
