Job overview

We are looking for a friendly, enthusiastic, and creative speech and language therapist to join our team!

This job is linked to new funding that we have received to increase the number of SLT reports that we provide for Education, Health and Care Needs Assessments. 

Part of your week (approx. 2 days) will be dedicated to assessing children in nursery and primary schools, speaking to nursery/school staff and parents, and then writing EHCP advice reports in a timely manner. 

The other part of your week (approx. 3 days) will be working in our Early Years service, including a focus on working with children with Social Communication Differences.   The successful applicant will work in community settings including: children and family centres, nurseries/schools, clinics, patient’s homes and various venues in Tower Hamlets. You will have regular opportunities for joint working with other members of the team.  You can be involved in universal, targeted, and specialist levels of support, and will have the opportunity to support ongoing development of the service.  The SLT service as a whole works within the Care Aims framework and seeks to enable children to communicate more effectively and get the most out of home and school life.  The team is a supportive and friendly one where your enthusiasm, empathy, and creativity will be welcomed. 

Main duties of the job

The post holder is an autonomous practitioner, providing assessment, diagnosis, prognosis, and a variety of intervention programmes in the management of the children across two teams 1) under 5s caseload  2) School aged caseload.

S/he provides advice and training to others, including inter- and multi-agency staff and parents / carers, to enable them to support the development of children’s speech, language and communication skills.

The post holder provides day-to-day supervision of bilingual SLT co-workers involved in providing a service to preschool children managed by the an Under 5s team. 

This specific post is in the Early Language Team, which supports children up to the end of Reception who have difficulties with comprehension, expression, or speech;  and / or in the Social Connect Team, which supports children up to the end of Reception who have social communication differences.  The postholder may also be required to support other speech and language therapy teams working with under 5s.

Essential criteria
  • Recognised degree in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and The Health and Care Professions Council

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with a broad range of paediatric communication disorders within one or more setting
  • Experience of working collaboratively with others as part of a speech and language therapy or multi-disciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in the community clinic setting or school setting
  • Experience in the organization and presentation of workshops, courses, or other training packages
  • Evidence of attending specific and relevant training courses and further developing clinical knowledge in areas related to the post
  • Experience of working with a range of cultural and religious practices in the community
  • Experience of working in deprived socio-economic, inner-city areas
  • Clinical experience of working with bilingual families
  • Experience of providing universal and targeted level support

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of child development, and the broad range of communication difficulties and implications of difficulties for a child
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of assessment tools relevant to the client group(s)
  • Knowledge of a range of interventions and well-developed applied knowledge of more specialized intervention techniques relevant to the client group(s)
  • Excellent awareness of standards of record-keeping
