West London NHS Trust  provides a full range of mental health, community  and physical healthcare services for children, adults and older people living in the London boroughs of Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham and Hounslow.

We also provide some specialist services that are commissioned regionally, such as our medium secure services; and nationally, such as the Cassel Hospital for people with complex and severe personality disorder and our high secure services at Broadmoor Hospital.

This substantive Consultant post within the Department of Paediatric Audiology at West London Trust offers an exciting opportunity to join a well-established, multidisciplinary team based at the Heart of Hounslow Centre for Health. The successful applicant will work alongside experienced Paediatric Audiologists, Speech and Language Therapists, and Specialist Teachers of the Deaf, contributing to the comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, management, and rehabilitation of children with audio-vestibular disorders.

We are seeking a clinician who demonstrates a high standard of professional excellence and a strong commitment to delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care. The post holder will be responsible for providing medical leadership and oversight within the Paediatric Audiology service, which operates under an Audiologist-led model. A personalised job plan will be agreed in consultation with the Clinical Director to reflect the service’s needs and the candidate’s areas of expertise.

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

·       Providing appropriate medical management for children with all degrees of permanent hearing loss.

·       Analysing results of tests and providing comprehensive reports to include advice on clinical implications of findings and suggested further investigations.

·       Counselling parents and children.

·       Arranging investigations into the aetiology for children with permanent hearing loss.

·       Arranging ophthalmology referrals for children with a permanent hearing loss.

·       Carrying out medical, clinical balance assessments and developmental assessments for children with permanent hearing loss.

·       Arranging cochlear implant referrals on suitable candidates as per the referral criteria.

·       Arranging BAHA referrals for suitable candidates.

·       Arranging clinical genetics referral where indicated.

·       Arranging further referrals to specialist centres when detailed clinical balance assessments are indicated or other specialist services are required such as

·       assessment for auditory processing disorder and auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder etc.

·       Arranging referrals to specialist clinics for management of patients with microtia and atresia.

·       Providing medical assessments for children with special /complex needs towards suitability for ABR under sedation. 

·       Working with audiologists regarding hearing aid provision.

Qualifications

  • A medical qualification or qualification registered with the GMC
  • Entry onto the Specialist Register for GMC or or be within six months of obtaining CCT/CCST in Audiovestibular medicine or equivalent
  • MRCP/MRCS/MRCPCH or equivalent (UK)

  • MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research

Experience

  • Experience of undertaking medical assessments and aetiological investigations for children with permanent hearing loss.
  • Experience of working within wider multi professional network, peer support groups
  • Experience of undertaking research, evaluation, and audit of practice.
  • Experience of developing and delivering training to students and audiology staff
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • Proficiency in a range of medical procedures, an indication of manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
  • Able to prioritise clinical need

Knowledge

  • Detailed knowledge of BAPA guidance, NHSP, paediatric audiology and related NICE guidelines
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and other current drivers and guidelines affecting practice
  • Deep understanding of deafness, its implication and vast knowledge of deafness related issues in the population
  • Wide-ranging knowledge of newborn hearing screening, role of NHS England and Public Health England.
  • Good knowledge of NHS newborn hearing screening programme, its quality measures, targets and commitment to deaf population.
  • Extensive knowledge of Audiology services especially Paediatric Audiology and hearing screening.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the principles of clinical risk management, evidence-based practice, patient safety and clinical quality improvement initiatives
