Job overview

We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic and well-motivated individual with laboratory experience, to join our team within the Blood Sciences Clinical Laboratory at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, part of one of the largest pathology networks in the UK, Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services.

You will need to demonstrate knowledge in Blood Sciences (Haematology and Blood Transfusion or Biochemistry) and have some experience in the day to day running of the laboratory. Likewise, you must be able to show effective leadership and communication skills and be able to work with the team in a positive and efficient manner. If successful, you will also be responsible for helping to maintain UKAS ISO 15189:2022 and MHRA accreditation, by participating in all aspects of the quality management system.

You must be keen to embrace new ways of working and develop your knowledge and skills and help develop others. In addition to these requirements, you will be expected to participate in the shift rota, covering shifts spanning the 24/7 working week, once competency has been achieved. You may also expect to work at other Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Service sites as required to maintain quality, training and service requirements. For a trainee position, you must be able to demonstrate that you are able to register with the HCPC and have made progress with the IBMS registration Portfolio.

Main duties of the job

To participate in the shift rota to ensure a safe and high-quality provision of the Blood Sciences service at RSH and throughout the Pathology Network.

The laboratory is currently moving towards full multidisciplinary working and as such you would be trained in all areas of the laboratory and be expected to cover unsocial hours as a multi-disciplined member of the team. As a new member of staff, you will be provided with suitable training with rotation in all sections of the laboratory, namely Haematology, Coagulation, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry. The laboratory is fully equipped with; Abbott Alinity H & CI analysers, ACL TOP 550, Immucor NEO Iris Blood Group Analysers and more. Experience with some of these machines is not essential but desirable. Our laboratory is fully accredited with ISO 15189:2022, MHRA and holds IBMS training status.
