Job overview

This is a very exciting opportunity to become a pivotal member of the Specialist cancer CNS team at MKUH cancer Centre. The post holder will be responsible for the Upper GI and HPB Cancer CNS support pathways, working closely with the MDT team across gastroenterology and oncology services.  

 

They need to be functioning well in a team setting as well as under their own initiative and who can respond to changing service priorities with this patient group. The post holder will have operational responsibility for the Upper GI and HPB cancer CNS workload and support the wider MDT team on group and individual activities surrounding patients and family care. They will have excellent communication skills, strong leadership, management, and interpersonal skills with the ability to drive change to ensure that the cancer service in the Trust is both safe and effective. The post holder will be a highly visible presence across the specialty, they will work to ensure the highest standards of care, setting and maintaining standards of clinical excellence and continuously improving experiences for patients, families and carers. You will deliver and support high standards and quality of clinical care both as a direct care giver and indirectly through the support and education of the wider workforce.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will contribute to the work of specialty cancer nursing across the hospital.

 

This leadership role will encompass:

 

o   Clinical assessment, treatment, care and support of patients at all stages of their pathway

o   Information and support to patients, families and carers

o   Clinical support of senior nursing and medical staff in decisions regarding care and treatment plans.

It is expected that the individual will be an expert practitioner in nursing with a high level of clinical credibility; the ability to establish close working relationships with senior nurses and medical staff; the ability to influence policy and practice.

 The post holder will work closely with the Cancer Specialty, Oncology Medical and Nursing teams.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

w    Demonstrates an in depth understanding of the ethical, moral and legal issues in caring for patients with cancer

 w    Demonstrates advanced communication skills in all contexts - with patients, their families and carers, senior medical and nursing staff 

w    Demonstrates a high level of clinical knowledge and expertise in specialty cancer nursing

 w    Undertakes assessment and treatment of patients with specialty cancer

 w    Works alongside senior clinical staff within clinic environments ensuring high quality care and communication

 w    Makes judgements involving complex facts or situations which will require analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options in order to reach the best decision with an individual patient

  • Registered General Nurse
  • Degree or Diploma
  • ENB 998 or similar teaching qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Specialty / cancer module
  • Master’s degree or working towards
