Children's Research Nurse

Band 5

Job overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.
Please see below for the detailed job description of the role.

Main duties of the job

Our award-winning paediatric research team is expanding, and we are now looking for experienced paediatric Band 5 nurses to join us.

As a Paediatric Research Nurse based in the NIHR Clinical Research Facility at University Hospital Southampton, you will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of studies with regular contact with patients and healthy volunteers that will make a real difference to future patient care.  The well-being and safety of our research patients/participants are at the heart of all we do, as is our confidence that the data we provide is accurate and reproducible.

We are a large team of over 20 Paediatric Nurses / Clinical Research Practitioners and Clinical Trials Assistants working together to bring exciting research opportunities to the UHS and wider community for the benefit of our patients and the future of healthcare.

The paediatric research nursing team work across all specialities within The Children’s Hospital, as well as in the community at patients' homes and vaccine hubs across the region.

Working for our organisation

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS, we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognising that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role of the paediatric research nurse is to:-

Provide specialist research and clinical care to research participants.

Assist in the management, coordination and implementation of research programmes in accordance with the International Conference on Harmonisation/ Good Clinical Practice (ICH/GCP) and the UK Policy Framework in Health and Social Care

Provide clinical supervision to other staff and students.

The post holder will be a car driver, with a full driving license and must be willing to travel to various locations in and around Hampshire and Dorset.

There is no set shift rotation, and the majority of the time you will work Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm; however, depending on individual research study requirements, there will be a requirement to have some flexibility in working hours with longer days, nights, and weekends on a preplanned ad hoc basis as per your research study requirements.

The NIHR Clinical Research Facility accommodates both adult and paediatric research participants, offering ward areas, consulting rooms, a physiology lab, a temperature- and humidity-controlled room, and a bronchoscopy suite. The majority of our research patients come from the Wessex region; however, the CRF is a national dosing centre for advanced therapy medication so patients come from all over the country for this treatment.

The CRF is award-winning, with many of our nurses winning posters at national and international conferences and winning prizes in national competitions in pharmacology and in nursing. The CRF is supported by its own education team and has close links to the University of Southampton; there are lots of opportunities to develop your career academically or professionally.
