Colorectal Consultant Surgeon - Pelvic Floor

Consultant

As part of the transition to a Group Clinical Services structure within Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, there is an increased expectation of cross-site working.

Although roles will have a designated base, post holders are likely to be required to work across multiple Trust sites in line with service needs. Where this is not included in the initial job plan, any future requirement arising from the departmental restructures will be addressed through the job planning process. Travel time will be taken into consideration in line with contractual expectations.

North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) have merged as of 1st July 2026 to become Bristol NHS Foundation Trust. This creates an exciting future that brings together the best of both organisations. As a single, strong and sustainable organisation, we will not only be able to deliver better outcomes for our patients and fairer care for our population, but it will also provide greater opportunities for our people.

Bristol NHS Foundation Trust recognise the value of a healthy work-life balance. When applying, speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate flexible working, so your work life fits around your home life.

We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates as they are under-represented within the Trust.

Our job adverts may close as soon as sufficient applications have been received. Considering this, if you are interested in this role, please do apply as soon as you can.

Main duties of the job

The colorectal surgeons work with a consultant-led ward round model of all elective and emergency patients. as timetabled each day. We have subspecialist MDTs for colorectal cancer, complex polyps, pelvic floor, specialistic mesh removal, complex endometriosis surgery and inflammatory bowel disease. In additional there is an intestinal failure support team and abdominal wall reconstruction. It is an essential criterion that the postholder can work as part of a large team and that they can demonstrate good relations with colleagues and patients.

When on call, the on-call consultant is responsible for reviewing patients in same day emergency care (SDEC) and acute admissions from 1pm. They are required to stay until 7pm. Consultants do an evening ward round on the day they are on call and a post take ward round at 08:00 the following day. On the day after on call, the consultant is responsible for the CEPOD list. The post holder will have no elective commitments when on-call. The emergency take has evolved over the in both volume and complexity and the proportion of the colorectal surgical workload presenting and managed acutely has increased significantly. GI surgery provides a subspecialist upper and lower GI take with patient transfer between teams.  We have a co-located medical and surgical SDEC unit. The surgical SDEC unit includes other surgical specialties such as urology and neurosurgery.
