An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Spinal & Upper Limb Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist to join our dynamic Musculoskeletal Outpatient Department.

Fixed Term Contract until 30 June 2027

This is a senior clinical role requiring advanced expertise in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of complex spinal and upper limb conditions. You will manage your own specialist caseload while providing clinical leadership, supporting service development, and contributing to the strategic direction and day-to-day delivery of a high-quality MSK outpatient service.

We are seeking a highly motivated, forward-thinking Physiotherapist who:
•    Has substantial experience in spinal and upper limb MSK physiotherapy
•    Preferably working at Band 7 level already
•    Demonstrates advanced clinical reasoning and experience in managing complex MSK presentations
•    Has experience in outpatient triage and service development
•    Is passionate about delivering high-quality, patient-centred care and driving service improvement
•    Has strong leadership, teaching, and mentoring skills

The Outpatient Department operates a 6-day service, and the successful candidate will be expected to participate in the Saturday rota. We also provide early morning and evening clinics to meet patient needs.

Main duties of the job

•    Deliver expert assessment, triage, and evidence-based management of complex spinal and upper limb patients
•    Provide clinical leadership within the spinal and upper limb pathways, supporting best practice and innovation
•    Contribute to the strategic planning, development, and evaluation of MSK services
•    Support the operational management of the service, ensuring effective day-to-day delivery
•    Supervise, mentor, and support both senior and junior physiotherapy staff and students
•    Work collaboratively within a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, including APPs, Consultants, and Team Leads

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will be working alongside four experienced Team Leaders and will be supported by a team of Advanced Practice Physiotherapists (APPs) and a Superintendent Physiotherapist across spinal, upper limb, and lower limb specialities.

Our department runs a well-established APP-led triage service, providing excellent opportunities for collaborative working, clinical supervision, and ongoing professional development. We maintain strong, productive relationships with Consultants and multidisciplinary teams across Orthopaedics, Pain Management, Rheumatology, Oncology, Maxillofacial, and ENT services.

Referrals are received from a wide range of sources including:
•    GPs
•    Orthopaedic, Pain, Rheumatology, Oncology, Maxillofacial and ENT Consultants
•    A&E, fracture clinic, and orthopaedic wards

This includes both trauma and elective post-operative patients, offering a broad and varied caseload.

We are committed to supporting continuing professional development (CPD) and service excellence. The department consistently achieves over 90% patient recommendation scores via the Friends and Family Test, reflecting our commitment to high-quality care.

Essential criteria
  • HCPC registration
  • Honours degree or equivalent
  • MCSP.
  • Member of Specific interest group

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience at relevant senior specialist level
  • Achieved core skills in all core Junior rotations, including speciality area/s
  • Evidence to support knowledge base in specialist area.
  • Evidence of post registration education and continuous professional development
  • Advanced/ Extended skills in equivalent to masters level modules
  • Clinical supervision of junior staff and students
  • Clinical audit / analysis
  • Leadership course e.g stepping up course/ LEO or equivalent
  • Clinical supervision of students
  • Retention and recruitment training.
