Senior Sleep Physiologist

Band 6

Trosolwg o'r swydd

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

An exciting opportunity has arisen to become part of the Adult Sleep Team at University Hospital Southampton (UHS). Our sleep service is rapidly expanding, and we are looking for a Senior Sleep Physiologist (Band 6) to join the team on a fixed term basis (Maternity cover).

As a service, we accept referrals for sleep disorder breathing, parasomnias, circadian rhythm and movement disorders, and work closely with other specialist areas (such as respiratory, NIV and Neurology services), to offer a multidisciplinary team approach to our patients.

Gweithio i'n sefydliad

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS, we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognising that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

The successful candidate will support the Sleep Physiology Team in delivering an efficient service to our patients. You will carry out and report on complex and non-complex sleep studies such as:
•    Overnight Oximetry
•    Cardiorespiratory Sleep Studies
•    Polysomnography
•    MSLT/MWT
•    Actigraphy
•    Capillary Blood Gases

You will offer continuous support, advice and follow up to patients on long term CPAP therapy. You will also offer daily senior support to junior staff members. You will assist with the teaching and training of staff and other trainees within the service.

Applicants who do not currently have a level of clinical experience that matches this role, but hold a relevant degree and clinical exposure in sleep medicine, will also be considered for a development post, in which the candidate will initially be appointed as a Band 5, who will progress to a Band 6, once they can deliver the duties within this role, autonomously and independently. Internal and external training will be provided to support developmental needs. Preference will be given to candidates who wish to enrol in the Scientist Training Programme (STP) in Respiratory and Sleep Physiology. This job role will be a great opportunity to expand your clinical skills in a well-established Sleep Service.

The successful applicant will be expected to work a late shift (1 to 9pm) and an early shift (7.30am to 3.30pm), as required; and will have the ability to work flexibly, be proactive and enjoy working as part of a team. A keen eye for detail and accuracy is also required.  This post is based in Lymington New Forest Hospital, where on-site car parking is available and free for staff!

Please be advised that this vacancy may close earlier than stated if we receive a large number of applications.
