This is an excellent time to join our expanding and forward-thinking research service, where you will play an important supporting role in delivering a wide portfolio of clinical trials and contributing to improvements in patient care and innovation.

As a Senior Clinical Trials Assistant – Imaging Technician, you will support the coordination and delivery of clinical research studies, working under the guidance of experienced imaging technicians /research nurses and principal investigators. The role combines practical clinical skills with research support duties, including undertaking ophthalmic imaging, assisting with study procedures, and ensuring accurate data collection in line with study protocols.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS, we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognising that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This role offers an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of clinical research delivery within Ophthalmology, combining hands-on patient care with study coordination and specialist assessments. You will coordinate and deliver the day-to-day activities for delegated clinical research studies, ensuring smooth implementation, accurate documentation, and adherence to study protocols.

The post involves providing high-quality direct patient care to research participants, including undertaking clinical observations and procedures such as venepuncture, ECG recording, and vital sign measurements, while also performing specialised ophthalmic assessments, including imaging and visual field testing, ensuring accuracy and participant comfort throughout. You will be responsible for managing and prioritising your workload effectively while maintaining high standards of clinical governance, safety, and research compliance.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrable experience in a clinical or research environment, with the ability to deliver safe, patient-focused care. You will have competence in clinical skills such as venepuncture, recording observations, and basic diagnostic procedures, or a willingness to develop these skills. You will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling you to support and reassure research participants while working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
