West London Children’s Healthcare is offering an opportunity to join a collaborative and innovative paediatric service as an Complex Asthma and Respiratory and Clinical Nurse Specialist (Band 7), based at St Mary’s Hospital.
This role sits within an integrated system across two major NHS trusts, delivering services across multiple sites and working closely with community, primary care, and wider partners to improve outcomes for children and young people.
The organisation is committed to reducing variation in health outcomes and addressing inequalities across North West London, with a strong focus on high-quality, equitable and research-driven care. Staff are supported to deliver excellence through professional development opportunities, access to research, and involvement in service transformation.
The Complex Asthma and Respiratory and CNS role offers the opportunity to contribute to both clinical care and wider system improvement, working within a multidisciplinary team to enhance asthma management across acute and community pathways. The service prioritises children and young people with complex needs and those from underserved populations.
This is an exciting post within a developing organisation, providing the chance to influence service delivery, improve patient experience and support innovative approaches to paediatric asthma care across the region.
Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd
- The complex Asthma and Respiratory Clinical Nurse Specialist is responsible for delivering and developing specialist asthma services for children and young people, ensuring care aligns with national guidelines and standards.
- The role involves autonomous management of a specialist caseload, including children with complex, severe or high-risk asthma.
- The post holder undertakes advanced clinical assessments, develops personalised management plans, and coordinates care across acute, community and primary care settings.
- A key aspect of the role is improving outcomes and reducing variation in asthma care, particularly for underserved and high-risk populations. This includes contributing to population health initiatives and system-wide priorities.
- The post holder also plays a central role in education, leadership and service development, supporting staff and promoting best practice across the multidisciplinary team.
- Overall, the role combines enhanced clinical practice, collaboration and quality improvement to deliver safe, effective and equitable asthma care.

- Registered Children’s Nurse (RSCN / RN Child) with current NMC registration
- Educated to degree level in a relevant subject or equivalent experience
- Evidence of ongoing, continuing professional development within paediatric asthma care linked to demonstrable clinical competences NHS England Tier 3 – Asthma in Children and Young People
- Student assessor or mentorship qualification
- Level 3 safeguarding training

- Relevant post-registration accredited clinical course in advanced assessment
- Leadership or management qualification
- Postgraduate study or willingness to work towards; • Foundations of Managing Asthma – Level 5 Diploma • MSc in Advanced Practice or Respiratory Nursing
- Non- Medical Prescribing qualification
Experience & Knowledge

- Excellent relevant Paediatric clinical skills including assessment of lung function (PEFR, Spirometry, FeNO), inhaler technique, asthma plans
- Significant post registration experience working with children who have respiratory illnesses, or asthma
- Excellent managerial, leadership and organisational skills
- Experience of teaching, training, mentoring, and precepting colleagues

- Experience working in the community setting including schools, early years settings and patients homes
- Experience of handling clinical incidents, complaints, and safeguarding issues
- Experience managing a specialist caseload, including complex, high-risk, or severe asthma
- Experience in quality improvement or service development projects
Skills & Abilities

- Understanding of resource management, health and safety, clinical risk and quality
- Sound knowledge of specialist paediatric asthma care, including pathophysiology, management protocols, and evidence-based practice
- Ability to deliver asthma education and self-management support to children, young people, and families

- Ability to lead clinical workload and change initiatives, both personally and as a facilitator
- Experience or willingness to participate in audit, research, and quality improvement initiatives
