Medical Examiner

Consultant/General Practitioner

Job overview

We are currently recruitment for several Medical Examiners on a permanent basis for 1 PA/week.

Medical Examiners are senior, independent doctors specifically trained to review deaths through a process of proportionate review, discussion with the attending practitioner and discussion with the bereaved. The Medical Examiner service delivers independent review of all deaths in both the hospital and community setting.

Main duties of the job

Medical Examiners work with Medical Examiner Officers to:

  • Ensure compliance with legal and procedural requirements associated with the current process of certification and registration of deaths.
  • Scrutinise the certified cause of death offered by attending practitioners in a way that is proportionate, consistent and compliant with national guidance.
  • To discuss and explain the cause of death with next of kin/informants in a transparent, tactful and sympathetic manner.
  • Maintain comprehensive, timely records of all deaths scrutinised, enabling analysis to provide information to healthcare providers and the National Medical Examiners office
