Main duties of the job

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department at UHS is delighted to offer a 12 month contract for a Junior Dental Fellow. As part of our team, you will work collaboratively with colleagues, helping to deliver excellent services and ensuring the highest standards of patient care.

This post aims to support career development and the candidate will have excellent training opportunities in wider aspect of OMFS/OS as well as the opportunity to link with Portsmouth Dental academy for a fully funded PGCert.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The placement involves duties at three sites (Southampton General Hospital, Independent Sector treatment centre at Royal South Hants Hospital, Southampton and Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester. All inpatient activities are based at Southampton General Hospital. There is no nighttime on call commitment, which is covered by the hospital at night team. On-call experience is gained during standard working hours 8 am-2030. Annual leave and study leave is allocated; flexibility is offered when possible.1 in 6 on-call weekends Sat and Sun 0730 – 20.30 at the end of on call wk 1. One FY2 (surgical) is part of the team and participates in the on call rota.

Qualifications, Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full registration with the GDC/eligible for registration
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • Previous experience of working in the NHS for at least 12 months
  • Experience working as an DCT1/2 equivalent post within the NHS
  • Certification in ALERT course
  • Obtained pass in Prescribing Safety Assessment (PSA)
  • Certification in ALS
  • Ability to assess and formulate immediate treatment plans for acutely unwell surgical patients
  • Ability to manage and prioritise unwell patients
  • Must be competent in undertaking on-calls at DCT1/2 level
Desirable criteria
  • NHS experience of less than 24 months
  • Previous out of hours shift experience within the NHS
  • Have completed MFDS part A but is yet to complete part B of the examination
  • Certification in a teaching course
  • Intercalated BSc, post graduate degree

Aptitudes & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English).
  • Demonstrate good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly
  • Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Ability to transport independently between sites
Desirable criteria
  • Presentation at a national or international meeting
  • Peer reviewed first author publication, case report, published collaborative research
  • Surgical logbook with at least 10 cases
  • Completed basic surgical skills (BSS) course
  • Completed 2 cycle surgically themed audit, QIP
  • Extra-curricular activity demonstrating commitment to surgery as a career – surgical elective placement, surgical taster week
