Senior Clinical Research Fellow in HIV and Infectious Diseases

Research Fellow (Locally Employed Doctors)

Our trust has over 17,000 staff serving 2 million patients every year. It comprises Barnet Hospital, Chase Farm Hospital, the Royal Free Hospital, North Middlesex University Hospital and more than 30 services in the community.  This larger scale organisation provides an unprecedented opportunity for us to continue our pioneering work, particularly in finding ways to deliver even better care to our patients.

Our mission is to deliver world class care and expertise in our clinical services, underpinned by world class teaching and research and we will continue to measure our progress against our five governing objectives: excellent outcomes, excellent patient and staff experience, excellent value for taxpayers’ money, being safe and meeting our external duties, and building a strong organisation.

Everyone is welcome at Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. We're proud of our diversity and we continue to undertake new initiatives to advance equality for LGBT+, BME, gender equality, staff carers and people with disabilities and lived experiences to promote good relations and understanding between our staff.

Your application is your opportunity to demonstrate to us how you meet the requirements of the role. We recognise that AI tools can support accessibility, equity and confidence for applicants. However, it’s important that examples and responses genuinely reflect your own experience and abilities, as these will be explored further during the selection process. AI must not be used to provide misleading or false information during any stage of the application journey. The postholder will provide day to day support of on-going clinical trials and other studies. Their overall supervision will be directed by Prof Burns, but on a day-to-day basis they will work primarily with HIV and Vaccine clinical trial research teams. The postholder will be central to the effective running of the wider group. An exact breakdown of percentage time spent in different duties is impossible to given the fluctuating nature of clinic visits for clinical research however it is anticipated that the successful applicant will undertake 3-4 clinical trial clinics per week seeing patients participating in clinical trials as per trial protocol. Outside of these responsibilities it is expected that the post-holder will develop their own clinical research project as well as participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.  If they do not already hold a higher degree then creating pilot data/fellowship application to register for a PHD would be encouraged. The clinical research project(s) should be within HIV/infectious diseases/STIs and related conditions and will be under the guidance and supervision of senior academic staff.

The HIV service provided by the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is recognised as an international Centre of Excellence for HIV care. It has an inpatient HIV unit and runs specialist consultant-led clinics within the department including in viral hepatitis, TB, cardiology, renal disease, rheumatology, ageing and frailty, chronic fatigue, lipid disorders, AIN, gynaecology and psychiatry. For stable patients on medication e-clinics are in place, which are both Doctor and Nurse led. The HIV department has a dedicated research team and many patients are involved in clinical trials including those for new antivirals, primary HIV infections and questionnaire based studies.

More recently, the Royal Free has established a dedicated vaccine trial research team.   This team successfully delivered on large scale Covid vaccine trials during the pandemic.  The vaccine trials team have more large-scale vaccine trials (Phase 1 through to 3) about to open and others on the horizon.  The post-holder will help support delivery and oversight of these trials.
