Job overview

The Respiratory Physiology service at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust has an opportunity to appoint a motivated, enthusiastic individual to the role of Clinical Physiologist (Band 5).

The role is primarily based at the Community Diagnostic Centre in Willesden, but involves rotation to lung function labs on other sites and the Sleep Centre. You will join a busy, friendly multidisciplinary team including physiologists, clinical scientists, administrators and consultants.

The CDC offers the chance for participants to be involved with NHS England commissioned pathways for breathlessness and paediatric asthma assessment.  We host PTP and STP trainees so you will be expected to play an active role in the education and training of student physiologists and other clinical staff, once trained. As part of our UKAS accreditation, we work with a strong QI mindset and undertake regular service audits.

It is desirable for the successful applicant to have had some previous experience in lung function testing. It is essential to have a good science background with a BSc in Healthcare Science (respiratory major) or equivalent. It would be preferable if you have obtained the ARTP practitioners examination and are working towards RCCP registration

Main duties of the job

  • Perform standard lung function testing, unsupervised once training is completed, gaining accurate and clinical valuable measurements.
  • Lead, educate and encourage patients in required test techniques, explaining the need for full co-operation and maximum effort in performing Lung Function tests by demonstrating the same physical effort and enthusiasm.
  • Assist in the efficient performance and administration of the Lung Function service and efforts to improve these.
  • Ensure correct usage, safety and appropriate maintenance of equipment ensuring compliance with health and safety, trust clinical governance and risk management.
  • Support the development, implementation and testing of new diagnostic procedures within the department.
  • Work towards state registration as a Clinical Physiologist through voluntary registration and prescribed professional exams.
  • Adopt and implement agreed service developments in line with the Directorate and Trust objectives.
