Due to the new national review of POSCU services we have the exciting opportunity to expand our team. The Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust is moving towards being an Enhanced Level A POSCU for Children and Teenagers with Cancer. To support the development of this service, we have an exciting opportunity for an experienced nurse to undertake the role of Paediatric Oncology Sister for Children and Teenagers with Cancer.
You will need to be an RN Child and have a high level of up-to-date relevant clinical knowledge and experience in paediatric nursing at senior band 5 or band 6, a 1st Level Nursing degree and experience of caring for children and teenagers with cancer and their families. An accredited post registration chemotherapy qualification in this specialist area of nursing practice is desirable or the willingness to undertake the training.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work closely with the Lead Nurse and Clinical Nurse Specialist for Children and Teenagers with Cancer to continue to develop a high quality service for children and teenagers with cancer and their families. You will work as part of the team to ensure the safe care of paediatric oncology patients on the Children’s Ward and administration of chemotherapy. You will have a key role in the development and delivery of teaching programmes for staff.
Excellent communication skills will be needed to work across both professional and organisational boundaries in order to ensure co-ordinated patient care for these children, teenagers and their families. You should also be confident and self-motivated utilising the benefit of your clinical knowledge and experience and be able to act as a resource to all levels of healthcare professionals and support staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To be a key member of the Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit (POSCU) multidisciplinary team (MDT), caring for children and teenagers (0-19 years) with cancer and their families. As a registered and accountable nurse, to act in the best interests of your patients at all times and take personal responsibility for your actions and decisions. To be responsible for patient assessment, planning of care, implementing and supervising safe and compassionate care, and evaluating the effectiveness of care. As an NMC registrant facilitate learning and development of others. You will be open, transparent and trustworthy. As a Trust employee act with integrity and uphold the values and beliefs of the Trust and the NMC Code of Conduct.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- RN (child) / RSCN /RGN with paediatric oncology experience/experience in a paediatric SACT setting
- Post registration education relevant to post. First level degree or working towards one.
- Evidence of recent professional updating and relevant personal development
- Teaching/Mentorship qualification
- Post registration oncology qualification or willing to undertake
- Administration of SACT course or to undertake and complete in the first 6 months of the role.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Specialist knowledge and experience of caring for children and teenagers with cancer and their families.
- Significant post registration experience at a senior nurse level or equivalent
- Can demonstrate up to date clinical credibility and competence
- Knowledge and experience of clinical governance issues such as complaints handling, clinical risk management
- Knowledge of the National Paediatric Oncology Service Specifications
- Experience in identifying need for and carrying out audits
Desirable criteria
- Mentorship experience
