Job overview
We have an exciting opportunity for an exceptional and highly experienced senior nurse to join Acute & Specialist Medicine as Lead Nurse for Acute Medicine at St Mary’s Hospital. This is a pivotal leadership role within the Directorate Management Team.
The post holder will provide strategic, professional, clinical and operational nursing leadership across a broad and complex portfolio, while working closely with Emergency Department colleagues to strengthen urgent and emergency care pathways.
The successful candidate will work in partnership with the Lead Nurse for Specialist Medicine, Clinical Director, General Manager, Deputy Divisional Director of Nursing and wider multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, high-quality and compassionate care, improve patient flow and experience and drive sustainable service improvement.
We would welcome applications from experienced senior nurses who are ready to provide visible leadership, work collaboratively across urgent and emergency care, and lead the next phase of Acute Medicine development.
Main duties of the job
- Strategic and professional leadership
- Provide visible, compassionate and inclusive nursing leadership across Acute Medicine.
- Contribute to directorate, divisional and Trust strategy, translating priorities into clear and measurable delivery plans.
- Lead service redesign and transformation, ensuring clinical quality, workforce sustainability and operational performance remain aligned.
- Provide professional advice and assurance to senior leaders on nursing, quality, safety and patient experience.
- Lead the quality, safety and governance agenda across the portfolio.
- Ensure effective systems are in place to review incidents, complaints, patient feedback, audits and quality indicators, with clear learning and action.
- Promote a culture of continuous quality improvement, innovation, openness and accountability.
- Maintain strong oversight of regulatory standards, professional practice and compliance with Trust policies.
- Champion co-production and ensure the patient and carer voice informs service improvement

Education/ qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
- Master's degree or equivalent senior-level knowledge and experience
- Evidence of continuing professional development relevant to senior nursing leadership
- Recognised leadership or management development, or equivalent experience
- Recognised teaching, assessing or practice education qualification, or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
- Master's qualification completed or working towards completion
- Formal quality improvement, project management or coaching qualification
- Advanced clinical practice or speciality-related qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial senior nursing leadership experience at Band 8A level or above
- Senior experience within Emergency Care, Acute Medicine or Specialist Medicine
- Leading large teams and complex services across multiple clinical areas
- Delivering quality improvement, transformation and sustained service change
- Quality governance, patient safety, risk management, complaints, audit and regulatory assurance
- Managing patient flow, workforce pressures and competing operational priorities
- Workforce planning, safe staffing, recruitment, retention and staff development
- Budget management, business planning and delivery of productivity or efficiency plans
- Working collaboratively with senior multidisciplinary, corporate and system partners
Desirable criteria
- Experience of Virtual Ward, medical SDEC, discharge, elective or cross-site pathway development
- Experience of research, publication, conference presentation or academic partnership working
- Experience of leading Trust-wide programmes or committees
- Project management experience
Skills
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of current NHS, nursing, urgent and emergency care, workforce and regulatory priorities
- Sound financial, resource and people-management skills
- High standard of written reporting, presentation and digital literacy, including Microsoft Office applications
Desirable criteria
- Root cause analysis or systems-based investigation skills
- Coaching, mediation or facilitation skills
- Knowledge of digital transformation, data visualisation or population health approaches
