Job overview
GP Expansion & Structured Learning Training Programme Directors Fixed Term contract currently until 31/03/2027
1 x 2 session post available - to cover Swindon, Gloucestershire, BNSSG & Bath
The GP TPD for Expansion & Structured Learning will be responsible for designing, implementing and managing innovative training programmes for General Practitioners (GPs) across the South West, including structured online learning.
The TPD will support the School of Primary Care to expand GP training by increasing placement capacity, supporting GPR progression through training and helping support expanding assessment processes.
The role will also build on the 10-year plan by extending placements to support communities and neighbourhood working, while developing a community of practice where educators can connect, share experience and resources, and support innovative models of training.
Please be aware that should you be successful in this position, you will be hired to the job title of GP Expansion Training Programme Director and this job title is advertised to attract the right skills needed for the role.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will work with other TPDs and ADs to provide:
Programme Development and Management:
- Provide additional support to programmes requiring enhanced TPD capacity.
- Design and develop a curriculum for Learning Programmes to Support Expansion that meets the educational needs of GP trainees and complies with accreditation standards and regulatory requirements.
- Continuously evaluate and improve learning programmes and support for GPRs based on feedback and educational outcomes.
Instructional Design and Delivery:
- Integrate a range of instructional methods, including e-learning modules, webinars, simulations and in-person training.
- Develop and source high-quality educational content, resources and materials, ensuring the learning platform is user-friendly and accessible to all trainees.
Assessment and Evaluation:
- Support assessment processes to deliver reviews for an expanded number of GPRs, including implementing tools and strategies to evaluate trainee progress and programme effectiveness.
- Analyse assessment data to identify areas for improvement, make necessary adjustments and report programme outcomes to stakeholders and accreditation bodies.
Working for our organisation
NHS England has a wide range of statutory functions, responsibilities and regulatory powers. These are focused on supporting the wider NHS to deliver high quality care, as well as doing those things that are best done once for the whole NHS.
Our staff bring expertise across clinical, operational, commissioning, technology, data science, cyber security, software engineering, education, and commercial specialisms — enabling us to design and deliver high-quality NHS services.
In March 2025, the Government announced that NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care will increasingly merge functions, ultimately leading to NHS England being fully integrated into the department.
If you currently work within the NHS and if successful at interview, we will initiate an Inter Authority Transfer (IAT) via the Electronic Staff Record (ESR). This retrieves key data from your current or previous NHS employer to support onboarding, including competency status, Continuous Service Dates (CSD), and annual leave entitlement. You may opt out at any stage of the process.
Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in our offices.
Staff recruited from outside the NHS will usually be appointed at the bottom of the pay band.
We cannot offer visa sponsorship for any vacancies.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The role requires excellent communication and collaboration skills and will deliver across the following areas:
Stakeholder Collaboration: Work with academic institutions, healthcare providers and technology partners to enhance Learning Programmes to Support Expansion. Coordinate with faculty and subject matter experts to deliver specialised training sessions, and engage with trainee representatives to ensure the programme meets their needs and expectations.
Mentorship and Support: Provide guidance, mentorship and support to GP trainees throughout the programme, addressing concerns and facilitating professional development. Organise regular meetings and forums for trainees to share experiences and best practice.
Administration and Coordination: Manage the administration of innovative structured learning programmes, including scheduling, budgeting and resource allocation. Ensure effective communication and coordination among programme participants and stakeholders, maintaining accurate records and documentation.
We encourage innovation, welcome discussion and drive improvement, and are looking for like-minded individuals to help us achieve this. We provide an open, inclusive environment where all voices are heard. You can expect support to develop personally and professionally within NHSE, with annual objective setting and learning opportunities throughout your career.
Further details about the role, organisational structure, recruitment profile, expected outcomes and benefits are available in the attached Job Description and supporting documents.
Structured Learning is a regional team, with programme participants based across different geographies; flexibility to deliver education across the South West will be required as the programme develops
