Job overview
An opportunity has arisen for a substantive Band 8b Highly Specialised Clinical Psychologist post working in the new Maternal Mental Health Service within the Paediatric and Women’s Health Psychology service at Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals Trust. The post is available on a 0.7 wte basis.
The paediatric and women’s health psychology service is a thriving department, which is committed to child and family centred care. There are opportunities for professional development through regular CPD, involvement in service improvement projects, and supervision. The paediatric and women’s health psychology service is part of the wider department of Psychology in Healthcare, enabling collaboration and support with adult psychology colleagues. There are also close links with the doctorate clinical psychology courses at Newcastle and Teeside Universities.
The post will involve seeing women under the care of NUTH Maternity Services for assessment and therapy. This is a brand new service, and the post holder will work closely with the Consultant Clinical Psychologist to develop clinical pathways, robust processes for service evaluation, developing Patient Participation and Involvement in developing the new service.

Main duties of the job
- Provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to patients’ formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan.
- Undertake aspects of service development leadership and service delivery as agreed with the Consultant Psychologist and represent the Consultant Clinical Psychologist at planning, review and service evaluation meetings.
- Provide line management and supervision for junior clinical psychologists and assistant psychologists and provide specialist and core placements for trainee clinical psychologists.
- To ensure a high quality, comprehensive specialist clinical psychology service within the maternity mental health service through the line management of the 8a psychological professionals responsible for a range of input across the service.
- Develop psychologically informed care through developing and overseeing teaching and training within the maternity service.
- Evaluate and monitor psychology input into the MMHS through the deployment of professional skills in research, service evaluation, clinical governance and audit e.g. KPIs.
- Participate in relevant departmental meetings and contribute to the development of the service within the Trust and network across the region.
- Liaise with other professionals/agencies in relation to the MMHS.
- Participate in working groups with other disciplines within the team to propose, develop and implement changes to policy/service delivery to enable more efficient patient care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Highly Specialised Clinical Psychologist
- Takes appropriate responsibility for clinical psychology provision to the service in which this post is located and supports the provision of a stand-alone service including demand/waiting list management, reporting and making recommendations regarding service provision. Is expected to manage the care of the most challenging and complex psychological presentations presenting within this part of the service. Is required to provide supervision of clinical psychologists and trainee clinical psychologists.
- Provides a qualified specialist clinical psychology service across all sectors of care to the population served by this post; providing specialist psychological assessment, formulation and therapy. Offering advice and consultation on patients’ psychological care to colleagues from other disciplines and to other, non-professional carers, working autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the team’s policies and procedures. To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the area served by the team/service.
- Is expected to take delegated responsibility for aspects of service delivery from the Consultant Clinical or Neuropsychologist and deputise in the absence of the Consultant Clinical or Neuropsychologist.
Principal Practitioner Psychologist
- Act as team leader in the absence of the Consultant Practitioner Psychologist
- Working across settings (e.g.in patient, outpatient, community clinics).
- Providing qualified psychology service to the population served by this post, as part of larger team.
- Responsible for clinical and research supervision of doctoral trainees.
- Supervision of qualified psychologists, assistant psychologists and other clinical staff as required.
- Personal duty of care for trust equipment and facilities.
- Provide training where required by the post and service.
