Job overview

The appointment will be subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service of Trust Grade Doctors (2017) and may be subject to amendment

We wish to appoint 1 Senior Clinical fellow at ST/CT 3-8 in Acute Medicine on a 12-month contract. The post is based in the Acute Medicine department at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and is a new post that we are looking to place within our Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit and Acute Medicine Assessment Unit. The post has a potential negotiable on-call commitment, at the same frequency as the other SpRs.

The Acute Medicine Team covers 34 in-patient beds across an Acute Medicine Assessment unit and Medical SDEC unit which is comprised of a 30 person waiting room and 10 cubicles within our treatment area. There are opportunities to also be involved in the Acute Medicine Clinic and AKI Clinic, accepting the full range of acutely unwell patients.

Main duties of the job

For this Senior Clinical Fellow post, we are looking for a candidate to work both ward shifts (09:00-17:00) and on SDEC (10:00-18:00), normal working days, predominantly on our Medical SDEC unit and possible Acute Medicine Assessment Unit when needed. The purpose of this post is to provide senior leadership to our Medical SDEC unit, Acute Medicine Assessment Unit and clinical teams who work within them. We would be looking for the successful candidate to help lead with service development and exploring ideas to help further the success of our SDEC/AMU department.

Working for our organisation

Bristol NHS Foundation Trust brings together more than 28,000 staff to deliver over 160 clinical services across thirteen hospital locations, operating from three main sites at Southmead, Bristol city centre and Weston.

With an annual turnover of £2.3 billion, we are now one of the largest NHS trusts in the United Kingdom. Our hospitals are spread across Bristol and Weston, join us and you can enjoy the very best of both worlds; city living within a stone’s throw of the countryside or beside the seaside, both with easy access to all that the South West has to offer.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties will involve delivering ambulatory type care to patients under the care of the medical team. The Medical SDEC unit acts as an extension of the Medical Take, with its own designated nursing team and Acute Medicine consultant. The successful applicant may also, if agreed and available, be part of the general medical on-call rota working both day and night shifts to cover ward areas and acute admissions. Some flexibility during times of peak patient activity and/or bed occupancy in covering other teams, such as the Acute Medicine Assessment unit, may be required.
