Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced clinical exercise physiologist to become part of the dynamic and proactive Imperial Cardiac Health & Rehabilitation Service. For this challenging and fulfilling post we are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic individual with in-depth knowledge and understanding of the physical activity components of cardiac rehabilitation.
You will be a BACPR qualified clinical exercise physiologist or equivalent with relevant clinical experience in a wide variety of physical activity settings. This should ideally include a minimum of 12 months experience in delivering cardiac rehabilitation within a cardiac rehabilitation setting.
You will need to be very enthusiastic about this area of work as well as being self-motivated, possess good organisational skills, and be able to work independently as well as part of a team.
You will be responsible for providing expert clinical practice in the field of cardiac rehabilitation. The post holder will also act as a resource to other professionals on cardiovascular disease and associated treatments and issues. You will be taking part in ongoing audit and research activities to maintain quality care provision.
You will be based in a St Mary’s team with clinics around North West London, and will be able to travel to provide cover to other Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust Cardiac Rehab sites.
Main duties of the job
- To deliver safe and effective exercise for patients with heart conditions and to contribute to the development of the exercise and activity component of the Cardiac Rehab Programme.
- Be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work – ensure that work is within professional standards and Cardiac Rehab clinical guidelines.
- Undertake multi-disciplinary and autonomous assessments using evidence-based outcome measures. Patients will have multi-pathologies relating to coronary heart disease such as high-risk patients with symptomatic atherosclerotic disease.
- Following competent assessment, to use advanced clinical reasoning and analysis to establish client-centred goals that provide individual treatments and programmes.
- Clearly convey complex knowledge of treatment techniques, biomechanics, anatomy and physiology to patients and other staff.
- Participate in the Cardiac Rehab assessment process, performing overview assessments as appropriate and communicate relevant medical information assessment details and advice, across agencies following Trust Guidelines for sharing of information and informed consent.

Education / Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BACPR Phase IV Cardiac Rehabilitation Exercise Trainers Certificate PLUS one of the below
- Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) BSc in relevant exercise & health related degree with BASES CEP/AHCS CEP registration.
- Exercise Instructor Ongoing registration with BASES instructor level or CIMSPA at Level 4, together with extensive experience in early/core rehab
Desirable criteria
- Relevant CPD Activity i.e. Postgraduate studies in related field (CPD Modules, Cert, Dip, MSc, PhD) or working towards this; BACPR Study Days/Conference/EPG etc.

Essential criteria
- Minimum 12 months experience in cardiac rehabilitation
- Years of experience in other areas of physical activity which demonstrates a broad clinical background.
- Experience of planning, leading and evaluating exercise sessions for the cardiac population.
- Experience of risk stratifying and prescribing safe and effective exercise programmes
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge and experience of working with patients with multi co-morbidities and suitable adaptations.
Skills/knowledge/ abilities
Essential criteria
- Demonstrate commitment through involvement in Trust wide initiatives/ committees
- Knowledge of research and audit including implementation of findings and review of outcomes
- Demonstrate the ability to compile complex written information
- Able to demonstrate highly developed specialist knowledge of own patient group

- Advanced IT skills use or Excel
- Presentation skills
