Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Maternity and Gynaecology Team at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust as a Bereavement Nurse on a substantive contract.

We are seeking an experienced, compassionate, and motivated nurse to lead and develop the bereavement service, providing specialist support to women and families who experience pregnancy loss, stillbirth, neonatal death, or other significant life-changing events within maternity and gynaecology services.

The successful candidate will be an experienced registered nurse with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to provide sensitive, compassionate care during highly emotional and challenging circumstances. You will act as a key point of contact for bereaved families, coordinating follow-up care, investigations, including post-mortem processes, and ensuring families receive timely information and ongoing support throughout their bereavement journey.

You will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, chaplaincy services, mortuary staff, and external organisations to ensure the delivery of high-quality, family-centred bereavement care. The role will also involve supporting staff education, contributing to service development, audit, governance activities, and quality improvement initiatives.

You will be joining a dedicated and supportive team committed to providing outstanding bereavement care and improving the experiences of women and families across the Trust.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide compassionate, individualised care and support to families who experience pregnancy loss, ensuring their emotional, psychological and practical needs are met. This will require excellent communication skills due to the highly sensitive and emotional nature of the conversation.
  • Manage, plan and coordinate care for all bereaved parents liaising with the multidisciplinary team, and other statutory/voluntary agencies, have the knowledge and expertise to be able to support women around sensitive decisions such as termination of pregnancy.
  • Lead the development and implementation of bereavement pathways, policies, and guidelines, ensuring alignment with national standards such as the National Bereavement Care Pathway and CQC and NICE guidance.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist care based on evidenced based practice.
  • Facilitate the development of all staff including medical staff and support workers, providing training within this specialist field.

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse
  • Nursing degree
  • Recent evidence of clinical or professional development.
  • Teaching qualification (998/7 or SLICE)
Desirable criteria
  • Counselling certificate/diploma
  • Working to Postgraduate level

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable clinical experience in all areas of Nursing
  • Management of high-risk gynaecological/obstetric cases.
  • Experience of dealing with women who have experienced pregnancy loss.
  • Experience of presenting information within a group setting using PowerPoint or report format.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of resource management
  • Counseling / Support Experience
  • Participation in service development

Skills/knowledge/ abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to demonstrate the required expertise associated with a senior midwife role. Including Advanced clinical skills: I.V cannulations, phlebotomy & drug admin, Resuscitation of mothers
  • Ability to assess maternal and fetal wellbeing and implement the appropriate management.
  • Knowledge of Bereavement Services nationally and locally.
  • Knowledge of Statutory requirements following fetal loss i.e. CEMACH, CMR, HTA.
Desirable criteria
  • Counseling qualification.
  • Driving license and use of car for work purposes
  • Ultrasound qualification or willing to undertake the training
