Job overview

University College London Hospital NHS Trust (UCLH) is looking for a qualified and enthusiastic applicant for the post of a clinical research fellow (ST7-8) in neonatal medicine. This is an exciting opportunity to join a neonatal neurology research programme and gain tertiary neonatal intensive care experience working in the heart of central London at UCLH. This appointment is for 50% research and 50% clinical post for 48 months, working in the neonatal intensive care unit at UCLH. This post is suitable for a paediatric or neonatal trainee with previous neonatal experience in the UK and looking to develop research experience, and interested in completing a higher degree at the Institute for Women’s Health at University College London. This post would be suitable for an Out of Programme placement (OOP).

The UCLH neonatal unit is the primary referral centre for neonatal intensive care (a tertiary unit with 21 ITU and HDU cots) for the North Central London Perinatal Network and provides a full range of intensive care for the sickest and most vulnerable babies.  We specialise in neonatal neuro-critical care, and we are a regional centre for therapeutic hypothermia (cooling).  We work in partnership with our UCLH fetal medicine unit, a regional, national and international referral centre for complex pregnancies, and the world-renowned Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), a specialist paediatric hospital, to collaboratively care for babies with complex conditions.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join a well-established clinical, academic and multidisciplinary neonatal team with an international reputation for delivering excellent neonatal care, education and research.  This post offers an exceptional opportunity to work in a dynamic, supportive environment committed to high standards of patient care, innovation, and service development.  They will also benefit from the unit’s extensive and well-structured teaching and professional development programme, exposure to a diverse and complex neonatal case mix and opportunities to participate in research and educational activities.  The unit is accredited in Australia for paediatric training, reflecting the high quality of clinical experience and training available.

This role provides substantial senior-level clinical experience and clinical research experience in advanced neonatal neuromonitoring. The 0.5FTE research time will allow the successful applicant to pursue research studies related to neonatal neuromonitoring and neurocritical care. Senior residents will also develop advanced skills in clinical leadership, decision-making and service management while working closely with consultants and the wider multi-disciplinary team. The post holder will undertake responsibilities consistent with acting as the senior clinical decision maker and chief doctor on the shift, ensuring safe, effective and coordinated patient care while supporting junior staff and collaborating closely with the MDT.
