Job overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Job Title: Assistant Psychologist

Contract Type: Permanent

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team in the Paediatric Psychology Team at UHS, comprising specialist paediatric clinical psychologists and neuropsychologists. The team works closely with children, young people, and their families to help them understand and manage the emotional, behavioural, developmental, and psychological impact of a wide range of health conditions.

As a valued member of the clinical team, you will support the work of qualified neuropsychologists in delivering assessment and intervention for children and their families. The role also involves contributing to multidisciplinary working, supporting healthcare professionals through consultation and collaboration, and helping to ensure high-quality, family-centred care.

Training will be provided by experienced clinical psychologists and neuropsychologists, alongside regular clinical supervision to support your professional development and enhance your knowledge and skills within paediatric psychology and neuropsychology.

As a team we are committed to anti-racist and anti-discriminatory practice and therefore welcome applications from the Global Majority.

Working for our organisation

As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to. UHS is rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care.

We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 30% lower than London and 17 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting neuropsychological assessments with children and young people with epilepsy and central nervous system (CNS) tumours, helping to identify and understand the cognitive, emotional, and behavioural impact of their condition. You will communicate assessment findings sensitively and effectively to children and young people, their families, medical teams, and educational settings.

The role will also involve scoring and interpreting neuropsychological assessment measures and contributing to the preparation of clinical reports. In addition, you will deliver psychological interventions to children, young people, and their families, supporting them to adjust to and manage the challenges associated with living with a medical condition.

As part of the wider Paediatric Psychology Team, you will contribute to the team's clinical, research, service development, and administrative activities. You will work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues and actively participate in psychology and neuropsychology team meetings

The following skills and experience are needed for this post:
- An Upper Second Class Honours degree (2:1) or above in Psychology (BSc), conferring Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society.
- Previous experience working as an Assistant Psychologist, ideally including experience administering and scoring psychometric and neuropsychological assessments.
- Demonstrable ability to engage and sustain the attention and motivation of children and young people across a broad age range, including those with complex medical conditions, acquired injuries, or neurodevelopmental differences, during extended assessment sessions.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and work sensitively and compassionately with children and young people living with serious health conditions, as well as their families and carers.
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly and appropriately to children, families, educational professionals, and multidisciplinary clinical teams.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing demands, maintain accurate records, and contribute effectively to clinical and service-related activities.
- A commitment to working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and to delivering high-quality, family-centred care.
