Job overview

Following a successful business case, this new post offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced dietitian to lead in the dietetic management and provision of nutrition support to stroke patients. The role involves working across the stroke units to deliver high quality nutritional care to patients, and to take an active role in further service development. You will manage a clinical caseload of patients on the stroke unit in addition to line managing and supporting junior dietitians covering stroke, neurosurgery, neurology and general medicine.

The dietetic team is well embedded and respected as part of the MDT, providing excellent opportunities for collaborative working, training, audit and research. Our department is actively involved in the education of other health care professionals and student dietitians, and as an expert resource on nutrition in stroke, you will be expected to participate in this training as well as the supervision and development of junior team members.

We are committed to professional and personal development and you will benefit from many opportunities to develop and enhance the dietetic service whilst being supported in your own career development.

You will need to have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be a good team worker, with the ability to use their own initiative and take a flexible approach to day to day working. Comprehensive clinical knowledge and previous experience in is essential.

Main duties of the job

To work as a specialist dietitian within the Trust by providing expert assessment, monitoring and support for patients on the stroke unit requiring nutritional intervention by using evidence based practice and conforming to Best Practice Guidelines.

To take the lead in the development and provision of teaching programmes for Health Care Professionals across the Trust and be involved in the provision of nutrition support, in the key area of stroke.

To manage a clinical caseload of patients on the stroke unit in addition to line managing and supporting junior dietitians in the areas of stroke, neurosurgery, neurology and general medicine; and provide expert guidance and advice to other members of the MDT through attendance and participation in ward rounds and multidisciplinary meetings

Multidisciplinary team working, close liaison between acute and community teams, and highly developed skills in communicating with patients, carers, and other service users is essential.

Working for our organisation

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with.

They are benefitting from a new electronic patient record (we were the last acute trust in London to introduce one) and our maternity services have been rated good by the Care Quality Commission.

We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 346,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.

We’re proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre, Radiotherapy Centre and Hyper Acute Stroke Unit. We’re also part of the North East London Cancer Alliance.

We run a Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub. These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The majority of our 8,400 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.
