Job overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Job Title: Research Nurse/AHP

Contract Type: Permanent

Please be advised that this vacancy may close earlier than stated if we receive a large number of applications.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking enthusiastic Nurses/AHP to join our expanding Trustwide Research Team. Opportunities are available within our Hepatology & Renal, Critical Care, and Neurosurgery & Stroke research teams, as well as across a range of other specialties. The Hepatology & Renal post is offered as a 2-year fixed-term contract, while opportunities within other specialties are available on a permanent or fixed-term basis, with both full-time and part-time options. Experience in critical care, acute care or clinical research would be particularly advantageous.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in delivering innovative clinical research that helps shape the future of patient care. Working within a supportive and dynamic research environment, you will contribute to the successful delivery of a diverse portfolio of commercial and non-commercial studies, providing patients with access to cutting-edge treatments and interventions.

As a Research Nurse, you will lead and coordinate clinical research studies from study set-up through to close-out. Combining your clinical expertise with a passion for research, you will ensure studies are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with national and international standards.

You will work closely with Principal Investigators, multidisciplinary clinical teams, sponsors, the Research & Development department, and regulatory bodies to support the delivery of high-quality research across multiple specialties

Working for our organisation

As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to. UHS is rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care.

We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 30% lower than London and 17 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a Research Nurse, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality clinical research studies and trials, helping to bring innovative treatments and interventions to patients. Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will support the safe and compliant delivery of research, ensuring studies are conducted in line with study protocols, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and regulatory requirements.

You will identify and recruit eligible participants, obtain informed consent, conduct study-related assessments and interventions, and support participants throughout their research journey. You will also maintain accurate study documentation and ensure the quality and integrity of research data.

Our core hours are 8.00 - 18.00, but with the expectation for staff to be flexible to work unsociable hours to cover service needs.

This is an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of clinical research while providing excellent patient-centred care. We are looking for a motivated and organised individual with strong clinical, communication, and IT skills, who can build effective relationships with patients and colleagues, manage competing priorities, and contribute to the continued growth and success of our research programmes. A passion for research and improving patient outcomes is essential.
