Senior Diabetes Specialist Nurse

Band 7

Job overview

An exciting fixed-term maternity-cover opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated Diabetes Specialist Nurse to join our Specialist Community Diabetes Nursing Team. Based at the Diabetes Centre at King Edward VII Hospital, Windsor, you will provide expert, evidence-based care for people with diabetes across East Berkshire, working both independently and as part of the multidisciplinary team.

The role has a particular focus on specialist antenatal diabetes care and supporting the hybrid closed-loop insulin pump service. You will care for women and pregnant people with pre-existing or gestational diabetes throughout the antenatal pathway, working closely with maternity colleagues, and support people using insulin pump therapy through assessment, initiation, optimisation, interpretation of glucose and pump data, troubleshooting and ongoing review.

You will deliver individualised education on insulin pumps and hybrid closed-loop systems, including safe system use, carbohydrate counting, sick-day management and responding to glucose data. You will also contribute to wider specialist diabetes provision, community services and Primary Care support as required. Training, supervision and competency development will be provided to help you develop expertise in antenatal diabetes and pump therapy while maintaining broader specialist diabetes nursing skills. A Non-Medical Prescribing qualification is desirable.

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver structured and individualised education for patients and carers on safe system use, carbohydrate counting, sick-day management and responding to glucose data.

  • Work autonomously and as part of the multidisciplinary team across the Diabetes Centre, community services and Primary Care, providing specialist advice and support to healthcare professionals.

  • Contribute to wider specialist diabetes care, integrated service development, quality improvement, audit, education and the professional development of colleagues.
