Job overview
The 0-18 Children’s Bladder and Bowel Service is a small team of specialist children’s nurses, who provide information, assessment, support and treatment recommendations to families, children and young people with a bladder and/or bowel difficulty. We help support parents, children, and young people to make decisions that affect their future health and wellbeing and support them to achieve their continence potential.
The Children’s Bladder and Bowel service is an innovative and progressive service, and this role requires a flexible, warm and reflective practitioner committed to ongoing development of their skills and knowledge to maintain the excellent standards of the service.
You will require specialist knowledge, attitude and skills to deliver a service using evidence based practice to ensure quality care, advice and support to locality team members and the wider community. You will use advanced assessment skills to work in partnership with children, young people and families to understand their bladder and bowel needs and to agree appropriate support required to contribute to their long-term outcomes.
You'll work closely with the primary health care team, education services, social care and the independent sector. Above all your compassion will mean that together we can make a difference.
Main duties of the job
- Complete comprehensive bladder and bowel health needs assessments to plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care, including analysis, interpretation and comparison of options available to meet identified need, in partnership with service users, parents, children and young people.
- Develop and deliver programmes of care for complex needs and provide highly specialised bladder and bowels advice.
- Assess for provision of appropriate continence containment products including ordering and annual reviews.
- Offer evidence based advice, and refer to Safeguarding Children and other agencies where appropriate, in line with Safeguarding Children Policies and Procedures including court reports/legal documents etc.
- Actively participate in an advisory capacity on all aspects relevant to the promotion of continence in children and young adults.
- Establish and maintain a body of information so enquiries can be dealt with efficiently.
- Provide clinical expertise and advice on children’s bladder and bowels.
- Support children and adolescents, their families and other carers to influence and partake in decisions concerning their care.
- Keep abreast of advances and current developments within the field of continence within Clinical Governance parameters.
- Liaise with other Paediatric Continence Advisors within the Association of Continence Advisors Regional and Nationally and other professional organisations concerned with the promotion of continence in children and adolescents

Essential criteria
- Current NMC registration
- Teaching and assessing qualification and experience of mentoring students
- Specialist knowledge and experience of working with children who have bladder and bowel difficulties
- Knowledge of national policies relating to children's continence
Desirable criteria
- Study at post graduate level
- Specialist qualification in the management of continence
- Leadership and management experience
Knowledge and Skills
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of the current public health agenda in relation to children's continence
- Evidence of effective communication skills both written and verbal
- Ability to work as part of a team and autonomously, and experience of managing own workload
Desirable criteria
- Understanding of information governance and data protection
