Job overview

NHS England is looking for a Strategic Communications Manager to work as part of our national communications team to help deliver a joined up and effective approach to communications across the organisation. 

The Strategic Communications team plays a central role within NHS England, coordinating and informing NHS England’s communications priorities, working across national, regional and programme comms teams and working with NHS England’s senior leaders. The team promotes and supports best practice and continuous improvement in using audience insight for measurable and evaluated communications activities that improve outcomes across the organisation.

The ideal candidate will enjoy working in a fast-paced environment with an appreciation of news and politics. You will be able to identify risks and opportunities, and be up-to-speed in the latest approaches in communications.  The successful candidate will need to have the ability to work as self-starter, have excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail and a keen news sense.  An understanding of health policy is not essential. 

Main duties of the job

Specific activities will include:

  • producing high quality communications strategies on strategic objectives and executing their delivery and evaluation
  • taking ownership of key portfolio areas and play a key role in managing activity across national, programme and regional communications 
  • using insight and data to drive innovation in communications activity ensuring appropriate channels are used to reach and engage with different target audiences
  • leading and overseeing the effective analysis of evaluation metrics to measure the impact of communication activities and functions
  • co-ordinating set piece announcements that require delivery from all communication disciplines often to tight deadlines, and evaluation of this work

This is a key role in the delivery of an effective and comprehensive strategic communications service at national level for the NHS.

Essential criteria
  • 1. A keen understanding of and experience of navigating political environments and excellent news judgement.
  • 2. Demonstrable experience of supporting National/ Executive leaders to deliver operational objectives through communications.
  • 3. Experience developing, implementing , and evaluating comprehensive communication and engagement strategies and content for large-scale, organisation-wide pieces of work, including national announcements, often under pressure and to tight deadlines. This includes the ability to work out of hours and at weekends when required.
  • 4. The expertise to set the standard for national communication activity and support colleagues to achieve it including managing and motivating matrix teams.
  • 5. Demonstrable excellent written skills, including the ability to write creatively at speed and read documents at speed and summarise key points.
