Job overview

We are delighted to offer this exciting opportunity for an experienced registered nurses to work as part of the newly created SWAN Bereavement Service. 

The Macmillan SWAN Bereavement Nurses will work:

  • to develop and implement the SWAN Model for End of Life (EoL) and Bereavement Care within BCUHB.
  • to act as a clinical specialist providing information, advice and emotional support to bereaved families. 
  • to provide support to ward teams and other staff involved with caring for dying patients and bereaved families.
  • to act as an educational resource for multidisciplinary teams regarding EoL and bereavement care. This will include provision of support and training.

The post holder will be based centrally, working to provide a service across BCUHB.

Qualifications and/or Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • 1st Level Registered General Nurse
  • Post Registration qualification in relevant area or knowledge gained through equivalent experience
  • Relevant First Degree or knowledge gained through equivalent experience.
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Master’s level learning or prepared to work towards
Desirable criteria
  • Master’s level qualification or knowledge gained through equivalent experience
  • Bereavement counselling or relevant qualification
  • Teaching qualification or knowledge gained through equivalent experience
  • Advanced communication skills
  • Awareness of local, regional and or national policies & standards relevant to bereavement care

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post registration experience, at Band 6 or above
  • Experience of working effectively as part of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrates leadership skills and experience
  • Experience in end of life / bereavement settings
Desirable criteria
  • Experience or knowledge of the SWAN model for end of life and bereavement care
  • Teaching skills and experience
