Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join the Community Complex Conditions Service Multi-disciplinary team in Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. We are looking for someone who enjoys working as part of a skilled interdisciplinary team, supporting and collaborating. The team is co-led by a Consultant Therapist and Consultant Clinical Psychologist and includes Clinical Psychology, Assistant Psychologists, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Dietetics, GP and support staff. The service supports people presenting with Long Covid, other post viral and fatiguing conditions, persistent physical symptoms, breathing pattern disorder and those who present frequently to services. We are an award winning, friendly and supportive team; who are research active, with a passion for co-production with our partners with Lived Experience.
We are a pan North Wales service, with base to be agreed with successful candidates. We have a full time permanent position available but will consider applications from those interested in full-time or part-time hours.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
The post holders will be required to undertake clinical work within the BCUHB CCC Service, working directly and indirectly with patients, families in outpatient clinics and in their own homes when necessary. The Speech and Language Therapist will also provide training, supervision, consultancy and advice to multidisciplinary colleagues on difficulties with communication, eating, drinking and swallowing for patients with complex chronic conditions including: Long Covid, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME, Persistent Physical Symptoms and Breathing Pattern Disorder.
There are likely to be referrals for a wide range of diagnoses and conditions including but not limited to:
- Eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties
- breathing pattern disorders
- dysphonia pharyngeal dysfunction
- vocal hygiene
- cough hypersensitivity and aiding cough control and
- de-sensitisation of the larynx in chronic cough
A desire to develop skills such in diagnostic and therapeutic laryngoscopy is desirable, to support patients with Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction and cough hypersensitivity.
Due to the evolving nature of the conditions covered by the service, regular ongoing review of the literature will be an integral part of the role, in order to inform the advice that is given to patients. These patient groups are often well informed and the successful applicant will need to maintain credibility with patients by being up to date with the latest research and thinking.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- • Recognised qualification degree / equivalent in S<
- HCPC registered
- Post graduate study relevant to clinical area at Masters level or equivalent demonstrable experience at this level
- Able to demonstrate continuing professional development e.g. up to date, relevant CPD portfolio.
- Clinical supervisory experience
Desirable criteria
- Membership of appropriate clinical network group
- Accredited Practice Placement Educator Certificate
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant experience clinically in area of specialism
- Experience of clinical leadership
- Delegation to qualified and non-registered staff
- Experience of delivering clinical education in area of specialty
- Significant experience of leading multidisciplinary / multiprofessional teams
- Involvement in clinical audit
- Experience of delivering / supporting practice / service change
- Evidence of attendance on specialist short courses and advanced training in relation to clinical specialty
