Job overview

The successful applicant will join a team of five dedicated Consultant Urological Surgeons to provide a consultant-led comprehensive and modern urological service to the local population. 

Applications are invited for the post of Senior Clinical Fellow for Urology department. This is an opportunity to join a busy, dynamic multidisciplinary team to help us improve the Urology service that we provide to our population. This is initially a 1-year fixed term post.

This post offers excellent career development opportunities, particularly for senior urology registrars. We provide dedicated support for Portfolio Pathway (formerly known as CESR) aspirants and those preparing for the FRCS exam, with consultant-led mentoring and peer support. 

Main duties of the job

  The department of urology is a cohesive unit that provides a full range of core urology service, with each of the consultants having a sub-specialty interest in addition. All new referrals are seen in the efficiently run Urology  clinic attended by all consultants. 

The appointee will be based at Bedford Hospital. The emergency on-call commitment will be on a 5 day week (08:00-17:00) 1 in 6 Rota, with prospective cover for annual and study leave. Including one night per week (non-resident),1 in 6 weekend covering 48 hours.  

The appointee should expect from time to time to fit in with alterations in circumstances, such as changes in staffing, introduction of new services, expansion or reduction of existing services and implementation and review of Annual Programmes. The successful candidate may be required to undertake duties at other hospitals and health premises within the area.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointee will:

·         Have regular access to theatre sessions for urological procedures

·         Have a continuing responsibility for the clinical care of patients in his/her charge and for the continued functioning of the department.

·         Deliver a high quality responsive urological service to the patients who use it.

·         Undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the running of a clinical department

·         Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of current surgical practice

·         Maintain his/her professional development with all available training opportunities and ensure compliance with mandatory training

·         Participate in 2ww cancer clinics and other sub-specialty outpatient clinics

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • MRCS or equivalent qualification
  • • Full Registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council at point of application
  • • The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2014)
  • • If the Primary Medical Qualification including clinical contact was not carried out using English, applicants must either: • Have an academic IELTS score of at least 7.5 in each domain and overall, or demonstrate equivalence by providing evidence of English language skills or • Complete the Occupational English Test (OET) and achieve grade B in each of the four domains tested in the OET to meet the GMC’s requirement
Desirable criteria
  • • FRCS (Urol/FEBU) or equivalent
  • • Higher degree

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Completion of Foundation Competencies
  • • Completion of a Core Surgical Training Programme or equivalent
  • • Able to deal with general emergency admissions
  • • Logbook indicating validated experience of appropriate range and number of clinical procedures
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience of running a urological team on behalf of a Consultant at ST level
  • • 12 Months experience working in the NHS
  • • Completed a minimum of 2 years or equivalent training as clinical fellow in urology or equivalent.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Basic surgical skills and patient care
  • • Competence in pre-operative and postoperative management of general surgical patients
  • • Good organisation
  • • Ability to organise own learning and time
Desirable criteria
  • • Basic computer skills including Microsoft word and Outlook

Personal Skills

Essential criteria
  • • Ability to work as part of a team
  • • Ability to keep good medical records and communicate with other hospital departments and primary care
  • • Ability to understand and communicate with patients and colleagues
Desirable criteria
