Job overview

An opportunity has become available within the Imaging Department for an Imaging Assistant. We are looking for permanent and Bank Staff. 

This role offers the opportunity to undertake a multi-faceted position within the Imaging Assistant team, providing support across all imaging services. The post involves contributing to patient care, assisting with administration, and supporting the day-to-day maintenance of some imaging equipment. As the Trust moves towards a seven-day working model, flexibility will be essential to ensure coverage of all scanning sessions.

 

Main duties of the job

  1. To work as a member of the inter-disciplinary radiology team, inter-acting and liaising with colleagues, patients and public.  Verbally support them in potentially embarrassing and distressing situations.  Ensure the continuation of the highest standards of patient care.
  2. To liaise with the wider hospital multi-disciplinary team to maintain the continuation of in-patients at appropriate and appointed times, for imaging investigations.
  3. To be responsible for the correct identification of patients, using the departmental policy. Assist patients to change and escort them to the appropriate area of the department as required.
  4. Ensure tact, diplomacy and professionalism at all times, overcoming barriers to communication where necessary.  Show complete consideration for the privacy and dignity of the patient, especially when acting as a chaperone.
  5. To be able to assess patient condition on arrival and adapt care accordingly dependent upon age, well-being and clinical need.  Demonstrate empathy and reassurance.  To be aware of the limitations of their role and seek specialist assistance as necessary.
  6. To assist patients to maintain their personal hygiene, to include toileting and the safe handling and disposal of body fluids.
  7. To correctly transfer patients onto the imaging bed according to Trust policy and to ensure their continued safety during the procedure.  Frequently required to push beds, trolleys and wheelchairs throughout the working day.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Knowledge, Training and Experience

  1. To have an understanding of the imaging techniques carried out and the associated patient preparation.  To be able to cope with an unpredictable workload and promote good team working practice.
  2. To have a working knowledge of equipment used for patient support e.g. wheelchairs, specialised imaging beds and trolleys.
  3. To participate in the mentoring of newly appointed Imaging Assistants. 
  4. To identify own training needs and attend relevant courses.
  5. To study and complete the Care Certificate, and apply the learned skills to benefit the patients and the department.
  6. Learn, demonstrate and apply knowledge of radiation safety.

 

Image Processing

  1. To check and maintain the stock of accessory equipment in the working area.  May be required to participate in stock control.
  2. To trouble shoot problems where appropriate and report malfunctions to a senior member of staff.

Clerical and General Responsibilities

  1. Required to have keyboard skills in relationship to clerical duties and to assist the office administration as necessary.
  2. Ensure that the workload list, request forms and associated documents are available at the start of a session.
  3. To use the Imaging department and Nervecentre computer systems to obtain and sometimes record patient information.
  4. To accurately record and relay messages, complying with the Data Protection Act.
  5. To participate in audit and attend department clinical governance sessions.
  6. To replenish clinical stock in the area of work and ensure the environment is clean and tidy.
  7. Prepare the area for a subsequent session, to include powering on and off imaging equipment and securing the area at the end of the day.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Maths and English level 4/grade C.
  • NVQ level 3 in health care of equivalent.
Desirable criteria
  • Science level 4/Grade C.
  • Care Certificate.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Able to demonstrate dealing with situations in a caring and sensitive manner
Desirable criteria
  • NHS or care environment

Communication skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate with tact, diplomacy and sympathy.
Desirable criteria
  • Able to work within a multi-disciplinary.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of the need of confidentiality awareness at all times.
Desirable criteria
  • Basic knowledge of ionising radiation
