Job Title: Occupational Health Lead Nurse for Luton and Dunstable Hospital Site

Shift pattern: Monday – Friday

We are looking for an experienced occupational health nurse to be lead nurse in occupational health for the Luton and Dunstable Hospital site. You would support and deputise for the occupational health manager in providing an impartial, confidential and expert Occupation Health Service to the staff and managers. 

To provide an expert and reliable Occupational Health Service to other paying private organisations, including other NHS employers, private companies/businesses. 

To assist the Occupational Health Manager in leading and advancing clinical practice in line with DH guidelines and legislation.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated individual to join the Occupational Health team at the Bedfordshire Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job

To coordinate and supervise the day to day operations of the department. 

To supervise daily clinics and provide professional leadership, advice, support and guidance to the Occupational Health Advisors, acting as a professional role model and provide strong, facilitative and effective clinical leadership.

Assist in the development of the department’s business plans and strategy.  Undertake defined projects as agreed with the Occupational Health Manager to support the delivery of high quality clinically effective care.      To assist the Occupational Health Manager to monitor, review and develop Occupational Health policies and procedures to ensure they meet legislation and DH recommendations and reflect standards of best practice.

The Luton and Dunstable Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a 3,500 bed acute district general hospital; we have merged with our neighbouring acute NHS Trust in Bedford to become Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The occupational health departments on each site are currently aligning their services.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • RN – 1st level • NMC OH Specialist nurse qualification (cert/dip/degree). • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development to post graduate level or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • • NEBOSH Cert. • Counselling Cert. • Experience of Line Management/ Team Leadership

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Good range of substantial experience working as an OH nurse and taking a lead role in delivering an Occupational Health Service to a large complex organisation. • Presentation and teaching experience. • Proven ability to plan and organise complex activities and occupational health programmes.
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience of working in private industry as an OHN • Experience of working as part of multidisciplinary team • Good experience of leading and carrying out audits

Communication

Essential criteria
  • • Ability to communicate at all levels and ability to communicate with all patients/staff addressing barriers to communication (e.g. language, special needs/learning difficulties) • Ability to communicate sensitive and complex information in relation to medical conditions • Ability to negotiate and be persuasive • Excellent reassurance skills • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
