Job overview

Maintenance and development of the highest clinical standards in the management of  all Ophthalmology patients

To work closely with local managers, general practitioners and other medical and professional clinical colleagues in the efficient running of the service.

To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning clinical governance, research and audit.

 

Main duties of the job

Maintain the highest clinical standards in the Ophthalmology management of all patients.

Have responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional development (CPD) appraisals and revalidation.

Work under the supervision of  and be responsible to their respective consultant, or the on call consultant, and ultimately the Clinical Director of Ophthalmology.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Attend outpatient clinics, both general and specialist, with their supervising consultants.

Administrative duties such as letter dictations and approvals, following up on patient results, discharge letters and other clinical paperwork. The referrer and patient should receive outpt correspondence within 7 days. Electronic Discharge letters (EDLs) following an admission, such as for surgery, should be completed within 24 hours.

Other adhoc attendances at clinics, theatre with other Consultants as required in the absence of regular junior members of staff.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Medical Degree
  • Relevant Postgraduate qualifications MRCP, MRCS, FRCOPHTH
Desirable criteria
  • Additional relevant clinical experience

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Excellent all round experience of DGH work
  • Minimum of 2/3yrs experience in Ophthalmology
  • Ability to work independently, aware of own limitations
  • Understand the principals of audits
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding CPD
  • Experience of audits

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Interest in ability to contribute to teaching /learning of Jnr Drs & Medical Students
Desirable criteria
  • Publications and presentations

Personal Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to co-operate in a democratic team environment
  • Flexible attitude, team player with good management skills

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Ability to demonstrate and understand the principles and elements of Clinical Governance
