Job overview

Applications are invited for the above post for this 660 bedded acute hospital serving a local population of approximately 400,000. The appointment will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions of service for the 2003 consultant contract (England).

This an exciting time to join the Imaging department at Luton & Dunstable Hospital, which has now merged with Bedford Hospital to form the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The Imaging department has been rated excellent and well led by the CQC and an exemplar unit by GIRFT.

Bedfordshire hospitals imaging department is a friendly and cohesive team offering a high quality patient centred service with a broad range of specialities across the two sites.

We are looking for a Consultant with broad experience in all aspects of GI and HPB imaging to work alongside at least five other specialist radiologists. Expertise in colorectal imaging such as CT colonography and MRI rectum is desirable.

The successful candidate is, expected to participate in the Upper GI cancer MDT (currently 1:3), benign GI MDT (1:3) and HPB MDT (1:2).

Participating in the general radiology workload is essential and participation in other MDTs is encouraged and subject to agreement with the clinical director during job planning.

The successful candidate will also participate in the on call rota currently 1:18.

Home working is actively supported. All consultants have home reporting equipment including voice recognition software.

Main duties of the job

The Key tasks for the role of Locum Consultant in Gastrointestinal & Hepatobiliary Radiology:

  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of all patients presenting to the Hospital.
  • To deliver a high quality breast and thoracic diagnostic imaging service. 
  • To share, with colleagues in the Imaging Department the management of all patients referred to the Trust.
  • To participate in the delivery of on-call
  • Teaching and training of specialist registrars grade, junior medical staff, nursing staff and medical students. In addition the post holder will support Clinical Nurse Specialists, radiographers and sonographers.
  • To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
  • To have responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional development (CPD).

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Medical Degree
  • FRCR or Equivalemt
Desirable criteria
  • MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research

Registration

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register:  CCT (or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview)  CESR (or within 6 months at time of interview)

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in General Radiology.
  • Expertise in all aspects of breast and thoracic Imaging
  • Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work and delivering service without direct supervision.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in other specialist imaging and involvement in other specialist MDT

Clinical Effectiveness

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of clinical governance and ability to demonstrate ongoing CPD.
  • Experience of guideline appraisal.
  • Participation in relevant local audits.
  • Ability to interpret and apply clinical research.
Desirable criteria
  • Participation in relevant national audits.

Personnel Circumstances

Essential criteria
  • Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for purposes of on-call emergencies.
  • Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory Occupational Health clearance
  • Satisfactory DBS clearance

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students.
  • Understands learner centred teaching
  • Teaching ability and experience in conducting clinical/radiological meetings
Desirable criteria
  • Has attended Teaching the Teachers or similar course.

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance.
