Junior Clinical Fellow in Vascular & General Surgery

NHS Medical & Dental: Junior Clinical Fellow

Job overview

Applications are invited for the above post to commence as soon as possible for an initial twelve months with possible extension. The appointee will undertake duties equivalent to those of an FY1 doctor and participate on the full shift rota alongside the FY1 doctors within the surgical specialities.

The Trust has University Hospital status which provides an academic environment to the hospital and good facilities for study and training. In addition to an active postgraduate teaching programme, we welcome medical students from the UCL Medical School throughout the year. We have an excellent reputation for junior staff training.   Within the Centre of Multi-Professional Educational & Training (COMET) is the Medical Education Department, the library including an IT suite, and the Training & Development Department.  The main aim of the Medical Education Department is to promote postgraduate and continuing medical education and training for all doctors and dentists. The Hospital actively promotes career development and progression for all staff.

Main duties of the job

Duties are allocated by the supervising Consultant.  Duties will include the following, all of which you are responsible for.  This is not, however, to be regarded as excusive or exhaustive.

  • Responsibility for the care of in-patients admitted under the supervising consultant
  • Detailed clerking and initiation of all necessary investigations for the patient
  • Keeping full notes and ensuring medical records are constantly updated
  • Attendance at ward rounds
  • Completion of discharge notes
  • Attendance at education and training meetings
  • Undertake, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergency and unforeseen circumstances
  • Undertake, exceptionally, to be available for such irregular commitments, outside normally rostered duties which are essential for patient care
  • Work under the supervision of and be responsible to their respective Consultant, or the On Call Consultant and the Clinical Directors within General Surgery

The post currently participates in a full shift rota pattern.  The on‑call commitment is one in twenty one (1:21), with prospective cover.

Working for our organisation

Our Trust provides hospital services to a growing population of around 700,000 people living across Bedfordshire and the surrounding areas across two busy hospital sites in Bedford and Luton. Travel between hospital sites may be required.

We have state-of-the art facilities placing us at the heart of cutting edge health care. The Trust continues to be committed to delivering the best patient care using the best clinical knowledge and technology available.

As part of our continued response to COVID19 the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 (“the 2014 Regulations”) was updated and approved by Parliament. This meant that full COVID19 vaccination would become a condition of employment in all NHS roles which have face-to-face contact with patients and service users from 1 April 2022 unless exempt.

The Government subsequently announced that, given the changes to the Omicron variant, they believe it is no longer proportionate to mandate COVID-19 vaccinations for NHS staff. The Government’s decision is subject to Parliamentary process. This will require further consultation and a Parliamentary vote to be passed into legislation.

As this role is within scope of the current legislation COVID19 vaccination status will remain part of our routine Occupational Health check.

Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself, your family, your colleagues and your patients from the virus. If you’re still unsure, you can find lots of information.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointments will be subject to full Occupational Health Clearance and Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check for the successful candidates prior to commencement.

The appointee will have Full UK Medical registration at time of application.

Please note that vacancies may close prior to the advertised closing date when sufficient number of applications have been received. Please ensure that you make your application as soon as possible.

If you have not received correspondence inviting you for interview within 28 days of the closing date, you should assume that your application has been unsuccessful on this occasion.

Please see attached job description for more information about this role and working at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
