Job overview
The post holder will share clinical and managerial leadership within the Breast Surgery service with the present consultants. The post holder will need a specialist interest in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery.
An office base with secretarial and administrative support will be provided.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Responsibilities:
1. To provide, with colleagues, Oncoplastic Breast services in both in-patient and out-patient settings.
2 Management Responsibilities:
1. Participation in monthly clinical governance meetings within the department.
2. Active participation and involvement in meetings and other business in the colorectal service.
Active participation in managerial responsibilities within the Trust that allow the department to function efficiently and enable good governance of the department.
Working for our organisation
The Breast surgical department provide comprehensive service for both benign and malignant conditions, as well as family history screening and a screening service for other patients at high risk of developing breast cancer.
The Surgical Breast unit is completely integrated with the symptomatic Breast Radiology Service and with the Breast Screening Service.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Outpatient Clinics
Outpatient clinics are carried out at the Royal Berkshire Hospital as well as at the West Berkshire Community Hospital in Newbury, at the Royal Berkshire Bracknell Clinic, and at Townlands Hospital in Henley. We treat up to 500 cancer cases per year. The breast department provides a daily rapid diagnosis clinic where the majority of 2ww referrals are seen in a one-stop clinic and symptomatic referrals are seen with imaging at a later date if not possible on the same day.
Theatres
There are three theatre complexes at the Royal Berkshire Hospital and further theatres at the West Berkshire Community Hospital. General surgical theatres are located in the main South Wing theatre block at the RBH and all breast operating lists take place in these theatres, with laminar flow theatres for Oncoplastic and Reconstructive cases.
Oncology
The Royal Berkshire Hospital oncology unit is an accredited cancer centre: this unit has four breast oncologists and undertakes a full range of chemotherapy, biological treatments and radiotherapy associated with the treatment of breast cancer. The radiology department has MRI and spiral CT scanners. Supported by dedicated non-clinical coordinators, there is a weekly breast cancer MDT meeting
Clinical Care
The duties outlined are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service. The post holder is required to hold a CCT or equivalent. As such the post holder should be trained in all aspects of the specialty.

Immediate Responsibilities of the Appointee
The post holder will share clinical and managerial leadership within the Breast Service with the present consultants. An office base with secretarial and administrative support will be provided by the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust
Clinical Governance
We have a robust programme of audit and Clinical Governance with a monthly departmental Clinical Governance meeting. Findings from audit and Clinical Governance are regularly fed into the educational meetings and communicated widely amongst the staff.
They will also be expected to contribute to the programmes of F1/F2, Core Trainee and Specialist Registrar teaching. There is a weekly colorectal meeting which involves colorectal teaching as well as a full discussion on the management of the current inpatients. The junior staff are expected to take part in teaching and presenting.
Each third Friday afternoon of the month is dedicated to general surgery Clinical Governance and study afternoon. There is a regular thorough presentation of mortality and morbidity data with case discussions. Ward and theatre staff are encouraged to attend these meetings.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
- On the Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining a CCT in Breast Surgery at the time of interview.
- Specialist interest in Breast Surgery
- FRCS
Desirable criteria
- Fellowship training in Oncoplastic Breast surgery
- Higher Degree
- MS in Oncoplastic Breast surgery
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Broad general training in a wide range of breast surgery for benign and malignant conditions.
- Clear understanding of clinical governance and GMC Good Medical Practice
- 24 months Oncoplastic training
- Able to undertake a broad range of Oncoplastic and implant reconstruction procedures independently
Desirable criteria
- Experience in latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction
- Experience in chest wall perforator flap partial reconstruction
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Awareness of NICE guidelines and ABS guidelines for Breast.
- An understanding of the Francis Report as relevant to the post
Desirable criteria
- Experience of training in caring, compassion and patient experience
Organisation & Planning
Essential criteria
- Evidence of active involvement in audit and service improvement.
- Involvement in data collection for cancer patients and registries.
- Able to organise oneself and prioritise clinical need.
