Job overview

Maternity Care Assistant

The post holder will provide support to women and birthing persons on the maternity ward.

This will involve Antenatal and postnatal care. 

The Maternity Care Assistant will provide support to the registered Midwife/Nurse.

Main duties of the job

Support and assist the Midwife, in the delivery of the culturally sensitive, respectful, non-judgemental patient care.

Participates in all areas of fundamental care, e.g. assisting with personal hygiene needs, toileting needs, moving and handling techniques, serving meals and feeding, collecting specimens.

Practices in accordance with the Trust’s protocols and guidelines.

Understands the importance of the patient as the centre of a healthcare system.

Support with Infant feeding.

Venepuncture,, neonatal blood test, VIP care.

Removal of catheters.

Undertakes the recording of vital signs both adult and neonate.

Undertakes and completes the band 2/3 competencies in a timely fashion.

Attends mandatory training. Opportunities may arise to study for relevant NVQ level 3 awards.

Undertake daily bed round and answer call bells.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The primary role of the Maternity Support Worker (MSW) is to assist, support and work in collaboration with the midwife and the wider multidisciplinary team; in order to provide a safe and holistic approach to women centered care.

The midwife is ultimately responsible for the care of the mother and her new-born(s), and it is under the direct or indirect supervision of the midwife that the MSW assists with and provides clinical care following completion of any relevant or appropriate training.

The post is rotational and the employee will be provided with appropriate training for the clinical setting in which they are working. These settings include antenatal inpatient or outpatient care, intrapartum inpatient care and postnatal inpatient and outpatient care.
