Job overview
The position is based at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, a major acute medical and surgical provider for Reading, Wokingham, and West Berkshire, with specialist renal services extending across the region. The Trust is a large employer, delivering over 600,000 patient care episodes annually.The Trust operates a successful AMU for acute medical and surgical GP referrals, managed by a multidisciplinary team. The AMU includes assessment beds, higher monitoring beds, and is adjacent to the Emergency Department and Radiology. Cardiac emergencies and stroke thrombolysis are managed with dedicated consultant presence.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will join the renal team, working primarily on the Victoria Ward and supporting renal and general medical inpatients, as well as patients referred by other specialties. The Berkshire Kidney Unit offers acute haemodialysis and plasma exchange, and the role includes opportunities to attend specialty clinics (e.g., transplant, vasculitis).There is a strong departmental commitment to teaching, with formal and informal sessions each week. The role offers practical training (e.g., dialysis catheter insertion, kidney biopsy) and encourages involvement in research projects, potentially leading to publication.

- Evidence of experience in a range of acute medical specialties, with experience of managing patients on unselected medical take during core medical training or equivalent

Knowledge & Skills
Essential criteria
- Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
- Awareness of the basics of managing patients with CKD
- Evidence of competence in management of medical emergencies and in-patients through continuous work-based assessments, portfolio evidence, including log book documentation if applicable
