Job Summary

Faster Diagnosis Standard (FDS) Clinical Nurse Specialist – Gynaecology Cancer Pathway

The Faster Diagnosis Standard (FDS) Clinical Nurse Specialist will act as a key worker for women referred with suspected gynaecological cancer, providing expert clinical support, coordination, and navigation throughout the 28-Day Faster Diagnosis Standard pathway. The post holder will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including gynaecology consultants, Gynaecology cancer CNS, diagnostics, radiology, pathology, booking teams to ensure timely assessment, investigation, diagnosis, and communication of outcomes.

Key Elements of the Role

  • Act as the named key worker for patients referred on suspected gynaecological cancer pathways.
  • Coordinate all investigations and appointments required to achieve diagnosis within 28 days.
  • Monitor and manage pathway performance and escalate potential breaches.
  • Provide specialist information, emotional support and counselling to patients and carers.
  • Facilitate communication between primary care, diagnostics, consultants and cancer services.
  • Participate in MDT meetings and ensure timely progression of patient pathways.
  • Support data collection, audit, service evaluation and quality improvement activities.
  • Promote compliance with National Cancer Waiting Time Standards, including the 28-Day FDS pathway

The post holder will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including gynaecology consultants, Gynaecology cancer CNS, diagnostics, radiology, pathology, booking teams to ensure timely assessment, investigation, diagnosis, and communication of outcomes.

The post holder will provide specialist nursing advice and support to patients and their families from referral through to diagnosis, ensuring a compassionate, person-centred approach that reduces anxiety and promotes informed decision-making. They will proactively track and manage patients on the suspected cancer pathway, identifying and escalating delays, coordinating investigations, and supporting compliance with national cancer waiting time standards.

Working autonomously and as an integral member of the gynaecology multidisciplinary team, the FDS Nurse will contribute to service development, pathway redesign, audit, quality improvement initiatives, and performance monitoring to improve patient experience and achieve national cancer targets. They will provide education and expert guidance to colleagues, act as an advocate for patients, and ensure high standards of clinical care, communication, and governance are maintained at all times
